  • Hi Mark

You should have a look at the picture that Graeme at BGS put on this post,

    http://www.landscapejuicenetwork.com/forum/topics/tordon-22k-replac...

That was a product called Broadshot which works very well on Marestail, and will actually kill the roots off too.

We also have WHIPPET™ which is an alternative brand to third party brands such as Kurtail®, KIBOSH®, FINALE® and HARVEST and it will kill off the top growth very quickly, but will not kill the roots. Obviously, if you then treat any subsequent regrowth, you will starve the roots of their food source and they will die off also.

If you need any more information, please get in touch.

    Cheers, Ollie

  • Hi Ollie,

Silly question, but if Whippet doesn't kill the roots it's no better than a hoe, is it?

What's the point of putting down a chemical, if you need to repeat it until the root is starved by the lack of leaf growth creating photosynthesis!

Marestails grow incredibly fast. I have them on a property where I can't use chemicals and strim them weekly: it might be 75mm growth in a week. You would surely be wasting your time with a spray unless you were applying it at least weekly, unless it's acting on the roots as well? Applying it less often would just allow the roots to build up strength...

I've used ordinary Glyphosate in the past, using the glove method, and it's worked fine as a one-off treatment.

  • Hi Mark

I have just used Kurtail on a garden quite badly infested with mares tail, and I must say I am impressed.

On the first set of photos you can see that some of the mares tail has been knocked back a little. This was after a treatment of Round Up Pro- biactive 450, but it didn't really touch the sides.

The Kurtail, with the exception of a few stragglers, has been killed all the way down to the root with complete plant tissue destruction. I'll pop back to spot treat the remaining offenders and keep an eye on the situation over the Summer.

  • Oh, I forgot to add. The time scale from the first photo to the last is about 21 days.

  • Good job, it really works.... ill post my after picture below.
