Once dessicated (dried out) Marestail doesn't grow vegetatively from the top.   Currently there is no prohibition against disposal of Marestail under the Invasive and Injurious Weeds Act.   So it is actually entirely up to your own personal decision.

However in the interests of not spreading this awful weed further we would recommend burning where possible (under the guidelines of the Pesticide Code of Practice) as it reduces the risk accidentally spreading root matter. Currently we are not aware of any tips that will not take it

    • NB: The roots are a different kettle of fish and we would highly advise, not disturbing these.  However if you need to do this we would definitely recommend these are burnt onsite - soil movement off a site should be done as a last resort as a small rhizome can re-root very easily and spread infestation further.
  • I'm with Louise on this -

although young stems can be used as an asparagus substitute, ie eaten...anyone tried thismeans of disposal?!

btw I'm assuming we mean equisetum?
conyza is also called mares tail but is a different plant (it flowers for a start!)
