Worrying Posts

Hi all,it seems from time to time that there are some extremely worrying questions posed on the forum. As this is a site for people who promote themselves as professionals it concerns me that even the most basic of subjects prove to be a mystery to some.Remember, anyone can read our discussions, including prospective and existing customers.Just a thought.

  • I have to say, I have been feeling the same way. I am always happy to offer up an opinion but some of the questions are pretty fundamental, I'd never mention which one at the moment is troubling me but there is one question being asked at the moment that is VERY worrying for a business operator to be asking!

Not sure I agree that its particularly damaging but as I said, it does raise certain questions.
  • Your point has crossed my mind too however as a hard landscaper with little knowledge on the soft side of things I find it usefull to be able to ask or search through old posts for advice and expect others feel the same. Surely better to ask the advice of a pro than to just steam ahead with a half baked idea of how to do something. Our industry seems to be split between designers, hard, soft landscapers and maintenance guys, would be an interesting character someone who claims to be an expert in all those fields.
  • Because I think it would be better to send a PM don't you? There is no benefit to anyone to "out" someone in public, it opens them up to public criticism and that is never a positive thing. I understand what you are saying but I'm just not that type of person.

Why not mention the thread or poster. Never nice to talk about someone behind their back and perhaps said poster with defend their position, after all its an open forum where we can all talk our minds in a polite way.

My little gripe: Like most I have no problem with those that are comming up thru the "ranks" from learning from the great knowledge pool that exists in/on LJN

What does annoy me is when basic questions are asked and that person has clearly NOT taken the time to use the site search facilities to at least read up and understand the current view on things they are asking....

When this happens a lot, it reeks of general laziness..........
  • Hi Gary

I am afraid I disagree. I see the site as a moving entity where new members like to take part and be a part by asking and answering questions even if they are basic. I do not feel LJN should seen or directed to become an online library as its the interaction and taking part that allows it to be sustained.

I'm afraid we agree to disagree.

If anyone is serious about wanting to gain knowledge and progress their skills / business etc do you not think they should do a little due diligence, research a bit first AND then ask a question - however simple or basic it is.

It could be they don't simply understand the answers here on LJN, perhaps we have not expalined it well enough etc etc etc - which is fine.

BUT to just ask a lazy question because someone can't be bothered to get up of their backside I feel is a bit off....
  • Where else to research the answers than from those who have spent their lives gaining the knowledge and experience? I'd say LJN is the perfect starting point and often those answering the question refer to other sources of information for the person to explore.

It does worry me though, that people seem to be carrying out work without understanding the fundamentals of that work, whether from LJN or any other source. Ok to ask before undertaking the kind of work but a bit late during or after. Structured training certainly has its place.

I'm not saying LJN is not the place to start (excuse the double negative)

We all acknowlegde that LJN is a fantastic resource for peole starting out, expanding etc.

But if you want to be taken seriously and show you want to learn, you have to do a little 'self help' as well !!!
  • Maybe we should have a Frequently Asked Questions page...
  • Brilliant suggestion...
