What waterproofs do you recommend?

Having just spent the day in the rain, I've discovered that the lightweight waterproofs I have are not breathable and as a result I was wetter with them on then I would have been without them!I also need to replace my winter wet weather gear.My question is what do you use? I need tough thorn proof wet weather gear, two sets is okay one light weight and one winter wear, but both needed to be breathable.Look forward to suggestions, thanks

  • Hi Andy,
I have not really found wet weather gear that truly works. A few years ago tree planting in Scotland we had to wear chemical resistant gear that was waterproof and it was extremely good, however it was far from breathable.

These days I accept I'm going to get wet and instead focus on staying warm while I do. For this I find wool layers work a treat and are quick drying. With some sort of wind break to help reduce the affect of the wind.

  • I agree gortex although it doesn't come in cheap £70 for my trousers and about £90 for the jacket but shopping about you could probably get them a bit cheaper both by sioen both also have reflective strips. Mine have lasted about 2 years so far and still going strong

Hi not got an issues with gortex bar the cost but is it thorn friendly?
  • I've gone through loads of different types. Now I just keep 4/5 light enough jackets in Van & when soaked thru I change
  • Brix workwear.com , boots hiax 2 year guarantee gortex nail proof etc €130 , Cat jacket extremely same site , mascot rain pants with pouch for knee pads !!!
  • Hi Andy,

Have a look on www.meanandgreen.com i bought a pair of Gortex trousers and jacket and they have proven to be excellent however even they have struggled in a day long down pour so if your budget can stretch to it invest in two pairs. Mine so far appear to have been thorn resistant. Also if you go to any boot fairs look out for ex Army waterproofs.
    Good luck

  • I'd like to know the same thing! I've been using Helly Hansen ones, not cheap but not that expensive, kind of in the middle. They do tear/get holes, and after a while they lose a bit of their effectiveness and they don't appear to be very breathable, but...they have stood the test of time far far longer than cheaper ones we have tried - and we have tried A LOT, most of which ripped within a day or 2 of wear, sometimes even just a few hours

  • Hi, I recommend good Golf gear. Definitely waterproof and pretty thorn resistant. Also very moveable in!
