What Ride on do you operate?

I know its out of season but it just came into my head.

We use an allen national and a Stiga park pro.

If a local parish council contract is won we then need to get a 5 gang ride on.

So What ride on mowers do you all operate?

One off the best machines  is hayter beaver 5 gang mower,    with 5 gang unit mower you have think of the running  costs end of the year, like any other machine,

    REgrinds to all cylinders,

    Bottom blades

    bearings,

    servicing, engine and all hydraulics

This can add up towards  1000 pounds in servicing costs  end of the season

Somtimes the better way is  Small tractor with rear  finshing  rotary mower,  like a trimax , much cheaper on servicing at the end off the season,

  • Unfortunately its what the contract stipulates. I would rather use a rotary machine such as a 72" scag zero turn. The servicing has all been factored in too. I have seen a decent Hayter t44 that I may go for if we win the contract.

I was just curious into what machines others ran really.

I run a countax C600 with mulch deck. Have an old rear discharge deck and sweeper but dont use them anymore. I quite like the countax with mulch deck but using the sweeper tends to pull up creeping grass and weeds leaving a less than attractive finnish. Never heard of the h1600?

I also have a grasshopper 718D outfront zero turn with 52" deck. 18hp 3 cylinder diesel engine is superb. Deck is shagged so need a new one - £2300 !!!!!

two John deer's 36" and 48", one cut and collect other cut and mulch side discharge, both 22hp petrol

Ransomes 728 diesel with 72" rotary front deck, rear and side discharge with 3 "Gator" mulching blades  28hp

3 gang cylinder gull wing Toro 455 28hp, old, but covers so much ground quickly I wont part with it

  • Would purchased an ex council Hayter LT324 3 cylinder which cuts about 6 - 7 acres an hour. We use for sports pitches etc. The draw back with parish council work is the infrequent cuts which always leaves a mess with cut grass clumped all over the surface. A cylinder mower should really only be used if cutting weekly. The 50 - 72 inch rotary kubotas would probably be better if grass is always going to be long as very powerful machines.

We run an Iseki SGR 22 & an Allen National 68 both good machines.
  • Cost wise I would prefer a 3 gang and its probaly what we will get. The contract is for 15 cuts, baisicly every 2 weeks from mid March until mid November! With 1 cut in March, October and November and two cuts the other months.

The council stipulated that it should be a 5-7 gang trailed, but on all the areas that are to be cut except 1 this would course more problems than it would be practical. Most of their areas are from 1/2- 1 acre and then the park wich is about 5-6.  So I put in the cover note that it would be a 5 gang ride on max! Lets just hope I get it.

Also had another tender come through this morning for another parish council.

  • The areas are only an acre or max 6 acres then a five gang is a bit over the top. The LT324 I mentioned only cost about 5k 3 years ago (was 4 years old) and paid for it self very quickly.

There is a pic of it on our website www.countygroundsmaintenance.co.uk

  • This is what i was looking at as my budget will be around 4k.
