I'm looking to upgrade my Rotary/Roller Mower and have narrowed it down to 2 choices:Viking MB 655 VR (21" Self Prop with Briggs)or,Lawnflite 553 HRS-PRO (21" Self Prop/Honda)My gut instinct says go for the Viking on the premise that Stihl are excellent & Briggs are tried and tested. Stihl are very well designed and user friendly with hopefully minimal chances of going wrong. The Lawnflite has the Honda engine which again should be reliable and has a blade brake unlike the Viking. It is heavier however and has a smooth roller as opposed to a grooved one on the Viking which offers good grip.My main concern is that nobody seems to stock Viking and they have to be ordered so I have no way of checking one out before I part with my £800. I gather that Viking machines are very well known in Europe but yet to become popular here.Does anyone have any experience with either of these machines or know someone who stocks Viking? I'm in NW Kent. Thanks!

  • I can't remember for sure but I thought I saw some in here http://www.lameng.com/lamberhurst-engineering-contact/ last time I was in...worth a call anyroad.
  • i found this dealer in sevenoaks, the only viking dealer i could find in kent

  • Ive never used the viking but i have 4 lawnflights 2 19" and 2 21".

They are very heavy and ideal for commercial work BUT are prone to drive issues so beware.

The 21" is the only rear rollered mower with a mulch attachment which in the summer months is a godsend.

The 19" arnt as strong as the 21" or as heavy so i think in time i will be replacing them with hayters which for domesic use are great
  • Can't comment on Viking and don't know anyone who uses them. I do however joke that if only Stihl made lawn mowers!

I have recently got a few Hayter 48 Pro's - 19in. And love the machines. The drive / gearing has all be modified from previous years and they are a dream. I would never get the 56's out again - the 48 is that good. Doesn't matter if wet or dry conditions and a fab finish. You can even mow a lawn full of moss and make it look great.

On the clients lawns that I cut last year using the 21 in models (Honda Pro's and Hayter 56's) you wouldn't really notice any major difference by reducing the width down to 19. May be the odd extra line or two on the bigger lawns.

Also the 19in does mean you can get down some narrow passage ways where the 21's just wouldn't get passed without man handling.

As you can tell I just love the 48's.
  • Visited my local dealer today and to be fair was very impressed with the Viking. The repair shop showed me one they were servicing and being good old German design - what a dream to work on. By all accounts cracking little machines with no known issues. They will be bringing out a professional range next year and expect to see a big marketing push.
  • Well I've decided to go with my gut instinct and take a risk on the Viking MB 655 VR.

It's on order from a SE London dealer with a hefty discount so looking forward to its arrival.

Apparently I'm a bit of a guinea pig in going for this machine, I believe its only being released this month but German build and intelligent design with the Briggs will hopefully do me proud.

    Cheers for all comments.
  • If the smaller domestic mowers are anything to go by it should serve you well. I would be interested in seeing their new professional range but I got a feeling these would be ride on mowers. We will certainly see more of these machines out and about but I'm not that brave to bite the bullet and get on. I need to have a machine that I know will knock out 15 - 25 lawns every day with no down time.
  • The new Stihl/Viking 7 series - but watch out for new models next year
  • Stu - If the drive starts going slow then stops altogether - check the bolt holding the drive belt pully's. A few of the 2009 PRO's have this problem - nothing major - Take the blade off and use a 13MM spanner / stocket and give it a few turns. The pully should move back and forward it it moves sidewards as well the nut needs doing up tight.
  • are they plastic bodied??? no good for commercial mowing if stones crack casings !

    i always will use a metal/alloy machine
