Vehicle Printers

Hi all,
I'm thinking about adding a printer into my truck to print invoices on the go to my clients. Does anyone else do this? Whats your experience? My thoughts are it looks a lot more professional and automatically adds up clients running totals as opposed to hand written receipts.

  • Tom, not sure how you will keep a printer, or the paper to be printed on, safe let alone presentable in a working vehicle. Much simpler to use a web-based invoicing system and use your mobile connectivity (laptop/tablet/whatever) to generate one and send it to the client's email address - they receive it about as soon as you press the send button.

Lots of folk on here use Jobber, I use LedgerSMB, there are plenty of others to choose from. These applications handle your whole accounting needs online and backing up is automated. Much safer all round.

  • E-mail them?

Saves you pointless costs, and promotes your environmental credentials. :-)

  • You know nothing of the sort Tom!

At our age (I'm officially beyond retirement age) uttering words of non capice regarding electronics is bragging rights which come with seniority but rarely true. Hardly ever do I meet anyone however old these days who does not have an email address when you actually ask the question.

The exceptions are those in isolated rural areas without any connectivity, whereby age is not a factor. Everybody is equally (dis)affected. Norfolk may be rural but it is hardly isolated.

My old(er) clients that don't have email usually aren't that fussed on getting a printed invoice either, although I still enter it through jobber & down the line if they want a copy it's there.

I only had one client this year that didn't have an email and wanted invoices so he got a monthly statement as it kept the printing to a minimum

I'd say it depends on how many clients you have, i.e is it worth it.

I can accept that many of your clients don't do 'tinternet, but do they have debit cards.
If you're going to bother with a van printer why not do mobile payments instead and print a receipt

  • You don't want a full A4 laser printer in your van obviously (do you).

I was looking at some unwanted thermal label printers in a warehouse (the kind that couriers give to their customers for free) and swapping the labels for 'heat-sensitive' till-roll.

Similar to this Thermal label printer

That's as far as I got really because you'd still have to have compatible software to get all the right info on the invoices, maybe it'd just work.

Depends how far you want to go, i'm sure you could get decent EPOS software for an ipad or similar?

I've seen the Canon B50 12v USB portable bubblejet printer in use in a van, but I do not believe there is a current version. Single sheet feed, print quality was ok for 'text' or basic form style printing.

Here you go, a later version that was for sale on fleaBay for £15 :-)  - so still around ?

  • I use PayPal Here to invoice customers but its done via email so no need for printer or paper.

  • Quickbooks online amazing app give it a trial.
