Toro 53cm Commercial High Vac mower

We picked up one of the Toro 22186 Commercial 53cm High Vac mowers yesterday.

Fitted with a GSV 190 Honda engine, 3 point discharge (rear, side or mulch), lightweight but sturdy Ali deck we are so far quite impressed with it.

Very easy to handle, single speed (but fast), cut finish is good but no experience of how it compares to Etesia 46's in the wet.

Our first use of a Toro, but model being used by two large Council contractors down our way, so we have given it a punt.

Reasonable cost as well, with very good (via our normal dealer) support.

Will update Thread as our use of it progesses....

How does the engine compare to a Gx190? Aren't the s' supposed to be quieter?

Interesting comment. Was not something I was aware of, but will compare to other Honda engined mowers we have and report back :-)

  • How do they make the wheels look so cheap!

On the subject of Toros, does anyone run the 30" and have any feedback? They are laughably cheap, and I have a client who might be better off buying on and paying me less to mow their 1-acre lawn/paddock every week.

    Wheel specs : Commercial-grade steel wheels with ball bearings and long-lasting 8″ x 2″ (20 cm x 5 cm) radial-style, semi-pneumatic rubber tyres : Time will tell

I heard some comment at the Dealer that either the TimeMaster (cheap domestic) 30" or Turfmaster (expensive commercial) 30" has been discontinued in UK - possibly lack of sales (ie does not suit our work type ?). Will dig deeper.

At the price these come in at, we'd write the cost off within one season (expect its Depr cost to be ~60-70p/ Op hour - doesnt inc service/repair or fuel). So if it lasts past a years use, we're quids in.

  • We run a 30" Toro, twin blade, very pleased with the speed of cut, very quiet. Like most mowers, will not clear longish wet grass. Think it cost about £800ish. Will check in morning.

  • Used the side discharge yet? WOnder how it copes in long grass?

  • I bought one of these a few weeks ago and gave it a good go in pretty long damp grass and it ploughed through most of the time. May have pushed it too far though last week as although we stopped straight away, the belt melted. We 're now waiting for a replacement belt. Would still recommend this to anyone looking for an easily controlled mower with good power and multiple options for cutting on both flat and uneven ground.
  • Like you understatement Ben 'may have pushed it too far'! :-)

  • We got one last year, it's ok but nothing special. Bizarrely it's too fast for a collector mower which is rare indeed as we normally need to speed all our mowers up.
They don't cope with the thick wet stuff too well so are best suited to small multi stop rounds where its light weight comes into its own.

The masterminds at our place spent half an hour on site trying to start it without the grass bag on then drove 10 miles back to the workshop saying its broke.
