The noise of our machines can be very intrusive so it's best to be diplomatic with irate sufferers of noise pollution. I'd have just said "ok then" and kept the constant revs if it made him happy.
Blessed are the peacemakers !!
I was told by someone when I first started using a strimmer that they are designed to be used at full revs all of the time but I dont think this is true and he might have been confusing it with his chainsaw training.
When I did the Lantra Brushcutter course I asked about it and he said that you just use the throttle as and when you need it
As for the noise complaint, I think that just happens every now and again. I had a woman scream at me the other day for strimming at 5.45pm saying that kids were in bed. She had no kids and lived a few houses away so I just carried on
I gave my labourer a bollocking the other week for strimming on max revs, when there's no need. He's a good lad & only work part time for me, but he has a "need for speed" syndrome, he was only edging a lawn...Its a shame realy, as I was just thinking of letting him work on his own, but this puts him back to clearing up & weeding duties.

Sometimes need full revs on my kombi engine, but when I used a 460 it was only ever tickling the throttle to keep momentum as you cut (after getting it up to full speed)
Had a neighbour come round today on a job, shouting and screaming about blowers. Apparently some people blow all the autumn leaves into the road, and don't collect them: I must be one of those, so deserved a very vocal lecture!
You do get the odd idiot, but I think we also have to understand you will sometimes meet people who have other issues and are just taking it out on you. For all I know, my irate guy had suffered some problem in the past with rogue gardeners, or had received bad news today.
I also had Romanian gardeners working the other side, who's B&Q hedgecutter wouldn't start. They were hugely thankful I tried to help, and cut the whole top of the hedge. I feel I've made an eastern-European, cash-in-hand competitor's life better today, but upset a Daily Mail-reading, UKIP-voting Englishman!
Never have a sound problem with my pellenc gear. In fact an old flat capped geezer walked past the other day and commented how quiet I was. Awww bless him, to stop thinking about what bet to put on at the bookies on his way to the pub.
I would have thought that the revs depend on what you are cutting. Max revs for tough stuff etc. We have had moans about blower noise. What drives them mad is blipping the throttle. I tell the crew to keep constant but modest revs in built up areas.
I am intending to buy a cordless Stihl blower for the jobs where noise is a factor.
Had a neighbour start on me once for using and old stihl backpack blower. He was swearing constantly at me and said i would never work in the road again. He then told loads of people about me and i still have my job 5 years later.
Another guy said he would ring the police about me, i said go ahead call them. He said are you gonna call them or should i. Just laugh and carry on. I do hate aggressive people and it does churn me up.

Hahaha, Are you gonna call them or should I. That's classic.
With a 3 bit blade I always cut as you do, with a sycthing motion and its by far the best and correct way for long dry grass - Shorter or wet Full revs but if its dry exactally as you said, the old bloke probably just wanted an argument, Some people are just like that.
