Seeding a new lawn

In a few weeks time, after I've finished weedkilling, rotavating and levelling, I'll be seeding an area of about 700m2. My customer wants a slow growing grass. It's for an orchard-type situation with some shade, they have a young child but excessive wear shouldn't be a problem. Can anyone recommend a good mixture/source?Also, can anyone recommend a good spreader? I don't want to spend a fortune as I'm not planning on doing many seeding jobs but I don't want something that will break/frustrate either.

  • Firstly if sowing at the max rate of 35g per m2 then you would need one 20 kilo bag. Be warned, grass seed is not cheap!

Suggest a mixture that doesn't contains ryegrass.

Having no ryegrass helps make the lawn slow growing, with the right mix a slower growing grass will still produce a hard wearing quality lawn. Only draw back is the the ryegrass is normally very quick to germinate and start getting the lawn off to a quick start, the creepings take a little longer.

Aim for a mix containing a high percentage of Creeping Red and Chewings Fescue and slightly lower % of Browntop bent etc.

Have not used this company before but the price looks good and a fairly nice blend of grasses.

  • I am currently seeding my first lawn so thanks for the tips. I found this site cheapest for buying the seed and they had next day delivery. Good luck

  • Thanks all, good advice and lots for me to consider.

Does anyone have any tips for levelling such a large area? I'm used to 80m2 turfing jobs where rakes are sufficient.
  • I always use broadcast spreaders so can't recommend anything but I know of a small gardening company that uses a TurfMaster Drop Spreader and swears by it for the small to med lawns. Think it was around £50 - 60 mark.

I do however like the accurate "drop / spread" of the drop spreaders and should really invest in one. If I did I would probably look at the TROJAN DS because it has a capacity of 45 Kg with an effective spread width of over 90cm and the real reason if honest - It looks built for the job! Now only if my bank manager could be as excited about this as me :-)
