A little Wednesday night rant seeing as though we have experienced 3 windscreens cracked beyond economic (ie chip) repair since the start of April.

It is noticeable that motorways & major trunk roads maintained by the Highways Agency are being dealt with, but those roads delegated to the County Councils Highways Dept are not. They seem to be playing a waiting game, letting people or issues cause them to be reported before they are repaired rather than be pro-active.

The state of Surrey's roads (especially the A31/A331) is appalling and also noticeably worse than surrounding Counties. We've seen emergency repairs take place but still there is a lot of loose debris from pot holes etc on the roads.

Surrey CC has a history of poor Contractor control in respect of road repairs in past years and looks like its happening again.

Given I/we pay local Council Tax, Business Rates tax & Vehicle Excise Duty, I'd love to know where it all goes..certainly not on keeping infrastructure repaired.

So, we are now £210 (£70 excess per vehicle) worse off and a few lost hours. I so so wish I could make a consequential loss claim against the Council :-(

Rant over.....So what are the roads like in your area ?

Some of the roads round here are nothing short of, well I don't know what term to use....

Admittedly many are minor roads with very shallow, if any foundations, when run over daily by huge tractors and HGVS, the tarmac literally shatters and crumbles away into the ditches at the sides.

Council/highways variously repair using 'tarmac in a bag', usually tipped in and run over with the lorry wheel - occasionally gets a token run over with a wacker plate, edges of roads are repaired using type 1 MOT, tarmac planings, stone chips or soil.

I feel your pain as regards the windscreens, mine got smashed a few weeks ago by a chunk of type 1 flicked out of a pothole by a passing tractor. On previous vans, I have experienced a snapped rear leaf spring, destroyed spring bushes, bent and broken suspension components and a damaged wheel bearing all through pot hole damage. On op of this, it is impossible to get the 'life span' out of a set of tyres as the wheel alignment is never correct and getting it adjusted (again) is just a waste of £40....

One road I went down today had more yellow marker paint, pot hole repairs, concrete, chippings and soil in holes than proper road - makes me wish I had taken a picture now!

The lastest measure are signs nailed to telegraph poles on certain roads with the message ' ADVISORY 20 MPH LIMIT - POOR ROAD SURFACE' on them - these are official signs put up by the Highways contractor!

I reckon with the amount of potholes round our way we could plant tomatoes and supply Tesco....

  • round our way the tour DE France is coming so the local council is re surfacing the route, one A road has been closed for 9 days with a 15 mile diversion all the other roads that need repairs have had to take a back seat. they say it will benefit all the local residents, i will not sea a penny of it in fact it will cost me money as i will not be able to get to at least two jobs because of road closures on the day

Exterminate! Is £200,000 'Dalek' machine that blasts potholes in just 120 seconds the answer to Britain's crumbling roads?

Apparently to get a pot hole fixed people need to ring the council and inform them of it - they won't do it unless they're asked so its always worth letting someone know its caused a problem.

How quickly it'll be fixed after you tell them is another story though!!

Appreciate the fact 'we' can report them, but a bit like having dog and barking, eh ?

What are the CC's Highway's Engineers doing ? Clearly not driving around the local roads.

As I am now on a 'mission', couldn't help laugh at a road I went down today between Pirbright/Brookwood/Woking in Surrey. The road (double centre lines, kerb etc) lines have been recently been 'resprayed/remarked'.

No problem there you'd think ? Except that they have sprayed all the road lines into, along and out of all the pot holes down that road !

    Must get a picture :-)...

  • They are as bad as your area in mine I think Gary ;)
