NO JOB TOO SMALL ??

If you put this "No Job Too Small" in any of your advertising, you are really sending out the message that you will do anything for peanuts.

I would strongly advise that anyone that considers themselves to be a professional, never uses this term. It just send out the wrong message, to the wrong type of potential customer, who will want to pay peanuts. It makes you look cheap and nasty.

  • Just because it's a small job doesn't mean you can't make a decent profit from it, I find small jobs are useful as gap fillers in your diary and often less complicated than larger jobs.

    +1.
Small jobs can be a money earner and banker! 3 x 20 minute jobs at £20 each has a better return than 1 x 60 minute job at £45.
  • Only if they are all next door to each other. Otherwise by the time you have packed up tools and driven to the next job you are working for peanuts.

Generally, I agree though. There is no harm in accepting small jobs, just as long as you are kitted out in a way to make money from it. As with everything business related, it's all in the marketing.

Agreed to an extent. yes they are next door to one another, took them on as they are three elderly residents in a sheltered accommodation block who love gardening but can't do it themselves. However so long as you look at your costings carefully three £20 away from one another can be as profitable as one £45 job.
  • I completely agree with you. I was just making the point that you need to be careful that's all.

Adrian didn't imply that you can't do small jobs.

Just not to advertise that no job is too small.
  • Again, whether that was a good idea or not would depend entirely on your marketing strategy.

Stuart; yes I agree you do have to be careful or the profit margin can be eaten away.

    Seth; +1.

To say it makes you look cheap and nasty is IMHO a bit tough. I think Seths point about how your marketing strategy is managed is fair. I suspect it's all about the phraseology and indicting that you do do small jobs is fine, perhaps "no job to small" is too general may be "all jobs considered" just a thought.

    NO JOB TOO SMALL ??

That's why minimum charges were invented....

  • I wouldn't put it in my advertising, but can't see the issue?

It says "no job is too small", not "I will do small jobs for no money"!

I regularly do small jobs. They need doing, and so need charging for. Charge accordingly, but never turn small work away.

Simple example. Ten minutes re-attaching a fallen climber keeps a tenant happy, takes the pressure off an agent, so £30, £50 or something isn't an issue for the landlord to pay when it's £2K per month in rent.

I think it's as dangerous to avoid small jobs as to under-charge for them. Often it's the little things that lead to the best contact you'll ever make.
