New idea for waste

Hi Guys,

just after a little experience here! i usually have all my waste picked up from my House, however this isn't possible anymore! I'm considering renting a garage and keeping the trailer in there and fill it with the waste and empty it once a week (or more if needed). my questions are:

will this rot the trailer with all the moisture?

will it smell too badly in a garage for a week? (especially in the summer!)

Thanks guys, appreciated!

  • Would the lease on the garage be for commercial use, or are you thinking of trying to get away with a domestic one?

Didn't take that into consideration! was considering a domestic garage that is free standing and not under a block of flats etc.

  • Hi Daniel,
its a good idea to save up the waste until its worth travelling to your nearest tip or waste disposal site, but i would suggest putting it in ton bags to save the trailer and if you cover the bags it shouldnt get too smelly in a week! Theres no harm in treating the wood of the trailer in creosote or similar wood preservative when its dry enough, and if you get an 8ft by 4ft sheet of half inch osb (about £15 from builders yard) and cut it to the size of the trailer bed, that will act as a further barrier which could be lifted out every weekend to give it an airing.

  • I think so long as you keep the garage and the surrounding site tidy and your not picking up/dropping off the trailer at ungodly hours, you would be okay with a "domestic" garage, if you become the tenant from hell you would get evicted in no time!

  • Depends what the waste is really. Grass cuttings would soon kick up and leach goo if left too long. Just a feeling the occupants of the neighbouring garages would soon complain.

  • I agree. Just thinking that with a domestic garage in a residential area there is a lot more chance that someone will start to complain if it stinks.

I think it depends on the type of waste. Wood chip, soil, or waste from a fencing job would be fine. Damp grass cuttings in a warm garage in mid summer, however, could get a bit funky smelling pretty quick.

Thanks for the replies guys, it would mainly be grass cuttings and hedging. Cant really think of an alternative unless anyone else can suggest something? where i store my van and tools overnight is a no go as well!

  • How about getting friendly with a local farmer or landowner and asking to rent a corner of a field or yard for a few quid per month?

Im literally in the middle of the city, so would mean a bit of travel! however that may be my only other option atm.

  • Obviously grass cuttings are the smelliest so you would need to seal them in dustbins with tight fitting lids or similar. hedge clippings not so smelly so could go straight in ton bags. Select a site not too close to homes if possible. My unit backs onto back gardens of houses, never had a complaint yet because i keep it tidy, no silly engine revving and shouting and balling at daft hours. Common sense approach.
