Afternoon All,

Has anyone designed a MUGA? (Multi-Use Games Area) The site is a primary school with limited space, it will be installed in the playground. It needs to accommodate football, rugby, netball and basketball.

I am struggling to get useful information. For the sports to be included a polymeric type 4 surface seems to be advised.

There is also only a width of 19m available and this needs to include access clearance around the MUGA.

If anyone has any helpful tips they'd be greatfully received.

Many thanks
Claire

    Hi Claire

Groundplay follow me on Twitter: https://twitter.com/groundplayltd

Might be worth and email/call to them?

  • I used to work for schools that had multi pitches. Although they did look a bit messy, what with all the different markings they did work and even in small spaces. Whats the length of the pitch?
Removable posts is one option so they dont get in the way of each other. I think if memory serves me correctly ( it was quite a while ago I used to maintain these ) the perimeter is 1.5 metres all round for safety purposes. If your in the Reading area I could come along and have a look and offer some advice.

  • I work for kestrel contractors .we design build and install mugas.
  • Hi Jason, thanks for your reply. The pitch will need to be not more than about 17x30m. They would like football and rugby, as well as netball and basketball. I don't really know how a rugby goal would work with football...

    Thanks,

    Claire
  • Hi Claire
You could have a fixed rugby post with a removable football goal post behind ( like a five a side goal net ). The netball/basketball posts could be removable so as not to get in the way. Although a lightweight material would probably have to be used ( depends on how often it is to be moved about and who would be moving it ( I used to move steel ones about and found them heavy and awkward). All the markings would have to be of different colours to avoid confusion.
If you google pitch markings, you should be able to get the whole lot in the area you want with maybe a little adjustments in the sizes.
