Mowing Semi Inaccessable Gardens

Hi All,

Just wondered what the general concensus is on mowing semi inaccessable gardens? we've all been to quote jobs that are 400 yards up a dirt track, or through a garage/outhouse, or up 2o steps to the lawn carrying a 45kg mower! Do you bite the bullet and take the job on, charge as normal, or add a bit on for inconvenience? i recently had to pass a regular lawn cut to another gardener in my area because the back lawn was up a very steep and narrow set of steps that creased my back to carry the old honda up (i work alone so i couldnt "two it" up)! i do have a flymo hover mower but i dont overly rate the finish of them. Any other ideas for future reference?

Yep, take the job, charge and use a lightweight mower (Etesia Pro46 - what we use when single crewed or similar ~ 30kg).

  • Take the job if you wish, but have no compunction in charging a premium to compensate fro difficulty, unless you wish to be a charity.

  • My thoughts exactly Harry, it was only an half hour job start to finish, i did it for a year before finally admitting to myself that my bad hip (caused by "2-ing" a 14ft redwood sleeper 18 months ago!) and lower back didnt want to do it anymore!

  • Unless I have to, say for a client that gives me loads of work, I would say no.

Nothing worse than taking a mower through a house when it's wet, or bouncing it up and down stairs. Or leaving the van on a yellow line as there's no parking, anything like that it's easier to say no.

  • Funny you should mention the yellow line Paul, i recently looked at a garden on a main road, double yellows both sides, with a driveway literally 6 foot wide between brick pillars! i had to park 100 yds down the road just to tell the customer unfortunatley its a non starter! i just wonder how they thought it would be possible for a contractor with even a small van to do it. The mind boggles sometimes.

It'd suit a car-based gardener, I guess? There's always someone who has the right set-up for the job, it's about finding the right jobs for your own business I guess.
  • There is the solution to the issue
A gardener who thinks outside the box.
If you want the job there will always be away.
If it takes longer from getting out the van to getting back in charge for your time (on a price per job basis)

We have two tiny domestic lawn jobs picked up on a commercial site, both are up flights of concrete steps and even with the little Etesia H&S wise are none starters from a practical point of view, even with two people it's too far to carry a mower, I told each customer we couldn't get a mower in and the best I could offer was a strim, I put a polycut head on the strimmer sit it on the ground and "mow" off the grass which is then blown onto the border, both customers fully understand the access issue and are more than happy to have a fortnightly strim rather than a fortnightly mow :-)

There you go...and I thought that 'big bit' on the top was the collector with clear perspex windows to check how full it was......there again it could be the Ride-on's cabin ? Just thinking....and is that a scarifier at the rear ?

Should fly along on that machine...
