Mowers for wet weather

Last year was a good year so it wasn't too much of an issue. However we are due to change some mowers and I would be interested to hear which are the best for collection in wet / damp conditions. Mostly the grass is fortnightly growth.

Currently we are using Honda 2417's with 40-42" decks which are ideal for getting through gates / narrow bridges etc and around obstacles so I dont think we can go any bigger. However they're not as strong made as the used to be and the really dont like damp conditions. It becomes tiresome always having the clear the chute.

Thoughts welcome.

  • Viking mowers superb at cutting in wet

Etesia for smaller width ride ons.

Iseki SXG19 for a larger deck. Iseki has an agitator plate so you can shake the chute as it were to help clear it

  • We have an etesia hydro 100 good in the wet
  • Read that John Deere Jx90C's are good for cutting wetting grass.

  • How much are the Etesia Hydro 100's? Are they really that good in the wet?

Ive heard the Viking ride on's are meant to be good but have never witnessed them working in wet. Maybe I should arrange a demo in the wet...

Budget around £7k plus vat for a Hydro 100. Their collection in the wet (and dry) is virtually faultless.
  • Thanks Nick. I presume you've experience with them? and I take the £7k+ VAT as a new price?

How strong built and reliable are these Etesia's then? We have a walkbehind - forget the model - has a kawasaki engine and its built like a brick sh*t house. However its that heavy none of the men will use it.

Yup price is for a new one. Build quality is good. No bells and whistles but a solid machine which just works. Low vibrations too.

For walk behinds we use Pro46's. They are light, around 30kg and unstoppable. They take being dropped out of vans daily and a whole torrent of abuse by the guys yet they still keep going. Most reliable mowers I've ever owned. Plus they pick up in the wet and leave a very decent finish despite the lack of a roller.

Here is a pic of the cut with a hydro 100 on Monday.
