Moss

A customer of mine has a very large tarmac driveway which is in quite a poor state, and in places has a very thick covering of moss.
I have spent some time with a shovel and broom getting the worst of it up, and even after chemically treating, its coming back.
As the drive is so large, treating with chemicals is a very time consuming task.
I was wondering if a heat torch/wand will kill it?
Other option is to pressure wash the whole drive.

  • Is it a tarmac drive ?

  • You're on a losing battle with a poor-condition tarmac drive and moss....

Pressure washing will destroy the surface. I have a similar site, probably 100m2, which I spray 2 or 3 times a year with moss killer, MMC pro, and carefully remove the worst growth with a shovel.

It will come back: there's a reason it's there in the first place! Once the worst is removed, treating it regularly will keep it in check. Obviously cutting back any overhanging trees etc. will help, but if the surface is poor then it needs replacing at some point.

  • Agree with Paul. MMC will do the trick, a bit confused where you say spraying is time consuming. I would have thought that this method would be the quickest and easiest. As a matter of interest, what is the area?

Paul has nailed it. If you have the conditions for moss then unless situation can be changed: airflow, shade, water logging, etc then you will always have it - just depends how bad.
Biocides like MMC or our Algoclear depend on water volume to kill the moss - the more moss, the more liquid required to 'drown' it. Moss does not have a vascular system, like plants, so it must be well covered. Removing large chunks of moss beforehand will help or do a squeeze test to make sure the moss is not holding excess moisture
for bigger areas, AlgoclearPro is a 40% concentration, compared to most which are 10%, so it goes further...

  • Hi Sean, we have a product called MMC Pro which is a very cost effective and safe products for Algae, Grime, Mould & Moss. It is pH neutral & contains no bleach or acids; this makes it safe to use on all exterior surfaces - everything from tarmac to plastic to glass.

It will kill whats there and also prevent regwroth for a few months.

You could also register for our Trade Silver account which would discount the product further.

Let me know if you need anything else,

    Ollie.

    • Don't you still offer BIO GEM as a hard surface cleaner?  I used this last year on moss covered tennis courts and it killed the moss and whilst the areas were idea breeding grounds for moss it did offer good preventative protection.
