Filling a large gap in a Tarmac drive

A customer has asked us to remove a built up "corner" on their Tarmac drive so they can fit two cars on. They aren't usually bothered about aesthetics. So when we remove the built up corner and dig away the soil, what would you advise to fill the hole/lack of Tarmac with? Substantial enough that a car can drive onto it. The hole will be approximately 2.5m x 2.5m with one corner rounded off. This will probably need to be low budget. Any suggestions?

  • I did a similar repair in size to my own drive and I purchased the tarmac repair stuff. B&Q and good hardware shops sell it about 6 quid a bag. Seems to of done a nice job. Time will tell!?!

Why not put a bit of hardcore down with some gravel on top. May look ok. Would depend on the rest go the area I suppose

How many bags did you need Graeme? Did you put MOT down underneath? We have to cut down a 15' conifer that is in there and sits between two telephone wires!

That's what I was thinking of doing Richard, not sure what gravel would be best. Although I hadn't really considered the DIY Tarmac option.

I'd put some the the flint style gravel as it try to "lock" itself together rather than swoosh out in a wave if you know what I mean.
I know that sounds silly but the rounded stuff seems to go everywhere when you drive on it. Cheers Richard.
  • if you are going to run a car over it you will need 4" of hard core (wackered down) weather you use tarmac or gravel and a edging to stop it running away

I'd say if it's just to park front end of a car to make an extra parking space 4" hardcore whacked down plus gravel is a bit over engineered!
Seems a bit over the top to me. Not saying that's not a good way to do it just feels a bit much for somewhere to park a car.
    Cheers Richard.
  • not over enginered Richard as the car will runn in the same spot everytime and you will end up with ruts and loads of weeds in a very short space of time

I hear what you are saying however from reading post cost seems to be an issue that's all.
As long as you tell customer what to expect.
They pay the price. Cheap now with probs later or pay high now. Just pointing out an alternative.
Agree what you say is the best way. But sometimes people want things done cheap and as long as you tell them what to expect. They can then make their choice.
Having said that seen many block paved driveways round here and all over tbh that have sunk with whacked hardcore base etc. so even that's not full proof.
    Just my thoughts anyway.
    Not saying you're wrong mate!

    Hi Darren

Why not speak to LJN member (and advertiser) Instarmac? They have pothole repair kits and cold tarmac solutions.
