  • Very very very much depends on what you are growing - EG Sweetcorn / Brassicas would prefer a higher Nitorgen level, so something with a 3.1.1 ratio (so 6.2.2 12.4.4 are all the same just adust spreading rates.

A 6-9-6 would suit Potatoes reasonabbly well, and would also not be too bad for perrenials sucha s Rhubarb, Fruit trees and bushes etc.

Beetroot would do well, but I prefer higher N again as it seems to help them to be that little bit faster off the go and sweeter.

Personally I would not wast emy money using synths on a veg patch, and they are also Terrible terrible for the soil micro-life you want on a veg plot - 1-2KG of horse/cow muck a meter will give you more NPK in total (IE grams ) than 40g/m of this would, and would also feed worms, and build the soil structure in addition to feeding the plants.

  • Plenty of compost in the soil which is lovely, I was just a bit disappointed with results last year, especially potatoes. Plenty of horsedung/hay/sawdust mix available - do I just mulch between rows with it?

  • Weed it - also potatoes may have been hit by frosts if you planted before mid April last year which would of set them back - At least In Yorkshire - we still had frosts as late as late may last year.

PH Test it - Spuds like PH 5.5-6.5 and low yeilds are very common when people rotate from Brassicas to Spuds, having limed their soil.

If your soil is alkaline, Put more fresh muck on, or use muck as a mulch to help keep humic acid content high for the potatoes. Where abouts are you based?

I put on 6x poultry manure across the board. Everything seems to be growing nicely.........now if I can just find where the flipping rabbit is getting in I might actually manage to get a full crop of lettuces!
  • Depends what its for, I do so little seeding that all grass fert i use is high nitrogen for turf like 20-20-8

The main crop yara potato fert i buy is 14-14-21

  • Chicken muck, best stuff you can get.

  • I think their is conffusion as well over rates - your really looking for how many grams of the acutall nutrient you put in per given area - manure imo is the best, BUT it is slow release - you need to put the muck down Autumn before your spring planting to get the benefit - fresh muck wont make much difference - Although Id take exception to your assertion adam - Manure is Black gold - just bulky and you need a lot, a general guide is 1 wheelbarrow of manure is 1 handful of grow-more -777- so you can see its as much husbundary as fertilizer. I suppose the deciding factor is plot size - It did take me 2 days to muck over my 300sqm of veg this year and get it all planted, I could of saved alot of time going synth!
