Wondering what the best setup is for using concrete recessed posts with featherboarding fence, what size cant rails or spacing between posts as i keep loosing out on price as i price with a 3.6m cant rail with two concrete posts as such but is that over kill and should be doing a 2.4m spacing? Advice much appreciated

  • Hi I recently put up feather edge with concrete posts and 3mtr concrete gravel boards. The posts were extremely heavy even compared to the slotted type so I dropped them into the holes with a mini digger. The length of the rails is obviously 3m in this case......

  • I always run feather-edge fencing in 3m bays using timber or concrete morticed posts, pretty much standard down here. Only use 1.8m ( 6' )spacing on concrete slotted posts and panels.

  • always go for a 3m. 3,6m tends to suffer in the winds, only use 2.4 if it suits the spacing or in a very high wind area. hate using the concrete posts!

  • Yeah defiantly got some weight to them it's mainly domestic work and trying to get the customer to go for concrete posts but i had in mind that a 3 meter bay was very commercial way? My supplier also does a 2.4 m can't rail so was think you get the best of both as such. Did you put a middle post in on the bottom can't rail?

I hate concrete posts. I also feel that people think cheap as possible panels with concrete posts will last forever (I know this is about feather-edge) which they won't.

  • Normally put in the centre stump on the bottom arris rail but this is mainly to hold timber gravel boards in place.
  • Hi Rob I did 3m as that was the length of concrete gravel board held by the stockist. I put a stump in the centre to stop the feather edge slipping or sagging off the gravel board in the future.
