I do a fair few fence and deck treatments, good work and importantly, easy on the body, so fit them in between the tougher 'green' work.
I have a per panel (6 x 6)fixed cost which includes products and labour and for decking I have a per sq metre cost which is pressure clean with detergent and algaecide and two coats of cuprinol ultra tough deck stain. Book in a fair few of these jobs in the quieter months, most with regular maintenance customers. I insist on the products though, customer just chooses shade.
thanks for that Andy i'd be interested in having a chat with you about it
Can you drop me an email when your Free info@shawgardens.com
many thanks
No problem Phil - as it happens I was staining a 30 sq m deck today - it works for me to have my price broken down into these unit costs and it is slicker when I quote. I measure up, see if there any variables, such as millions of bloody spindles and give the customer a precise quote there and then. If you want to ask me any detailed questions, then email me at andykenney@ymail.com and ill get back to you. Andy
Just remember list all your materials add 10-20% to cover for fuel getting those materials and then a reasonable price to do the job
im doing 6 panels , shed and few fence bits - when dry & time allows from proper jobs.
Hi Andy
I've had a fair few fencing painting jobs over the past couple of months. I have people enquiring about re-staining their decking, some are people quote hunting and some are regular customers. Could you send me a message with what you charge for decking per sqm.
Cheers
Hi Robert - I've sent you a friend request so will msg you when you accept it - I have 3 rates, one is for deck stain only 2 coats, one is algaecide pressure clean, and deck stain 2 coats and the third is either of the first two plus a percentage based on if spindles and balustrades need to be done. This type of work can be more profitable than much of my regular green work and its not very physical so I fit it in either side of graft type work to rest the body a bit!
Hi Andy,
I have recently had a inquiry in regards to deck and fence treatment. The customer knows it's not a services that I offer but she would like me to undertake it as we have an established working relationship.
I would be grateful if you could help me out in regards to pricing? I don't want to over charge and also I don't want to run at a loss.
Thanks
Mark
Hi Mark - here's what I do mate, others may do differently but this is how to ensure your quote is viable and fair:
Work out the precise task - is it 6x5 featheredge panels, scallop panels etc. Do you need to cover existing gravel boards etc. Look at any other restrictions on your time such as accesss etc.
Work out your materials - type of stain/paint, how many brushes/rollers needed.
Work out the whole square metreage of the deck/panels.
E.G. products total £75
Fencing sqm (assuming 1 coat) 30
So your product only cost is £2.50 per sq m of fence.
Assuming 6 x 5 panels that is 1.83m x 1.52m = 2.78 sq m
Product panel cost is £6.95.
So say you want to earn labour of £20 per hour. If you do one panel every 20 minutes, that's £6.66 labour per panel.
So you charge per panel £6.95 + £6.66 = £13.61.
This is a simple method I use in these jobs, work out your time and material costs and divide down. It also looks very professional when you quote and your £13.61 (or whatever it is!) x 10 panels and quote a very precise £136.10. Customers respect precision rather than a "Oh £100 mate". Hope this helps a bit.
