Decking Query

My friend had decking installed as part of the house improvements, I believe it was completed by a carpenter and he has suggested that the gap between the lawn should be filled with gravel.

Whilst I can see some benefit to using this approach I would assume that at the very least a tanalised timber kick board or something similar before back filling with gravel else it would simply shift under the deck?

I’m not a big fan of decking and if I’m honest I’m not 100% sure that it was a good job but I firmly believe the job hasn’t been finished and at the very least it warrants a step down as the drop to the lawn level is a tad too much. Particularly after having one or two drinks!

I have been asked to assist in reinstating the garden (mates rates / limited budget of course ) but feel that the decking issue should be resolved first or at least we have some professional guidance as to how we can address the issue. Also is it advisable to turf up to the deck or should there be a few inches of gravel or something keep moisture away from the deck?

Appreciate some guidance as to what would be the best method to address this.

Many thanks

  • Gravel, up to the grass, with those lovely new patio doors? Tell him to sell the strimmer first!

I agree a step would finish it off nicely, and then just let the lawn grow up to it.

Might be a trick of the camera but it looks like the deck dips down where the water is collecting.

  • Good point about the strimmer, those bi-fold doors cost £8K!!

So suggest just building a step down for the whole length of the patio and then turf up to it?

  • You could be right Seth I will check that out. We did have a heavy downpour a few minutes just before the picture was taken.
  • Yeah, it doesn't look like there's any slope on it?

Is there a ghost dog in the house? He's reflected in the doors, but invisible on the deck outside!

I'd either finish it with another board and turf up to it, or the better-looking option of a step. If the front board gets damaged by years of strimming it's easy to replace.

  • I always strongly urge clients to go with a mowing strip of block pavers or similar where decking meets lawns. Give a nice solid edge to stop stuff migrating under the deck and deals with a difficult to maintain area very well.

  • I'd agree, Simon. My advice was given based on the costs of "a bit of gravel", or screwing one more board on to finish it!

I imagine laying a proper line of paving or blocks would cost as much as the deck.

  • 5- 7 inch 1/2 inch thick tanalised/ treated sawn timber screwed with green timber deck screws all along the edge / stepped back from edging board?
as cheaper and deeper / more depth that other wood.

how much are they drinking !?

  • 6-8" tread depth standard but if a full length step not suggested, specified or requested I'd be asking for payment to install one.
Gravel should have a timber edge bordering lawn and kick board (deck board) skirt to decking, again was it quoted for?
  • Unless they choose to plant a cool modern garden out from the deck and or low hedge bordering the deck with an area to step down only? It could look very sterile/boring grassing right up to the deck or mowing strip??
Also depends on how the rest of the lawn is to be levelled its looks slightly undulating still, due to construction of the deck, which will also have a bearing on the ultimate gap left.
