The thing I do is to have a float amount of cash in hand.
Which you replace as cheques clear. Cheques can be a pain but better than not getting paid!
  • I had this earlier in the year - I wanted only bank transfer or cash so advised all my customers in advance (about a month) that these were only methods of future payment. Everyone was fine but it needed to be proactive with some notice given by me.

  • The first thing that springs to mind is that if having to wait a couple of days for a cheque to clear causes you cashflow problems, that would indicate to me that you may have more serious financial problems in your business. Running a business in which you are literally waiting for cheques to clear, is no fun at all.

Is it the couple of days that the cheques take to clear that are causing you problems, or is it the fact that you can't get to the bank when you need to pay them in, so they hang around in your truck for a week first (we've all been there). If it's the latter, many of my clients have business accounts with Santander, which I think allows you to pay in at any post office. It's often easier to find a post office than your own bank (if you are busy but always out and about).

  • Getting to pay them is the problem. There's no financial problems as the cheques are my bonus money as I've built a nice 12 month maintenance contract round which supports me and the business. Just when a job drags out because of crap weather then you have another so many days for it to clear you could end up waiting two weeks to get paid. Just annoying as currently building business buying equipment it's slowing me down.
  • If the job dragging on is the problem, being paid by cheque is making very little difference. These days a cheque will clear in 2 days. I say this with the very best of intentions, but it sounds to me like you are trying to convince yourself that this is what is causing you a problem. I can't see that having to wait an extra 2 days to buy a piece of equipment will slow you down.

Do you take deposits / staged payments, or do you bill for the entire job when it's completed?

  • Bill for entire job normally

I really wanted to know if anyone used a card machine .
  • Maybe start thinking about taking deposits and staged payments to improve your cashflow a bit.

If you want a card machine, some of my clients use this company I think, although there are others.

  • A mate of mine uses a card reader for his landscaping business, money is paid in instantly, and he gets instant notification to his mobile phone. He loves it! Probably be your best option.

  • The above paypal system looks good don't you think?

Be quite convianant for me a card reader.
