Just back in from another wet and wonderful day dealing with tree issues at business parks and thoroughly fed up with my old Stihl 'portable' duvet chainsaw trousers :-(

Any recommendations for an 'infrequent' user (ie I'm not a full time tree guy, nor do I climb), ideally with modern, lightweight fabric, full protection & 'waterproof'?

  • Although not waterproof, Oregon Waipoua type C are quite water resistant, very comfortable and not too pricey at £130. Ive been wearing them for about a year now and im very happy with them.

    Thanks guys, will investigate tomorrow....

Just didn't believe Stihl's arcane online sales policy extended to clothing as well (checked on several suppliers sites)!

... but remember...choosing the wrong size or colour of trousers could be a killer ;-)

Let's face it, as professionals we all need that amount of Nanny-ing....don't we .... :D ?

Yep it's a joke the retailers can't post anything stihl out not even a chain brake or even a stihl pen! It's going to push a lot of people to husqvarna (unless husky do the same)

I wonder if there is any implicit liability that falls on Stihl by this approach ?

If Stihl GB woke up and worked with it's professional contractors, I am sure there are simple solutions to this issue...such as supplying your Public Liability Insurance policy number?

Would that separate Pro's from Consumers ?

A couple of months ago I had to buy another backpack blower for one of the teams, yet still had to go get it, get a briefing etc. For god's sake it's our 4th one !!!

Interestingly, one of their main suppliers gets around it for their locality by using their own 'staff/del drivers' to deliver kit and thus adhere to Stihl's policy about handover talks etc

    J S Tree & Garden Care said:

Haha maybe that's there thinking! However on a serious note surely it will have an effect on their machine sales. For me all of my kit is stihl from saws to trimmers etc but I will now buy husqvarna where possible so I can ring my local dealer ( a 30 minute drive away) and order a chain brake if I need one instead of driving to collect one. I understand the need to do a handover of certain products to non pro users but for people who need spares what's the sense in this new policy! Bit of a derail but I can see this ridiculous policy affecting their sales

It's arrogance like this that really sees businesses get damaged.

Stihl might be perceived as the best but with an customer care policy there will, eventually, be an exodus.

I can think of so many big brands - Yell(ow Pages) Kodak & Blackberry, to name just three - who've ignored market forces and are now either no longer in business or are just a shadow of their former self.

  • I have a pair of stihl Hiflex. happy to wear them day in day out for comfort and light weight but they are not the most hard wearing.

  • I,am a bit biased to be honest as I worked for Sioen clothing, but neither Stihl or Husqvarna make chainsaw clothing, they give contracts to manufacturers who give them the best deals, hence why sometimes your clothing does not wear the same as a previous product you may have bought. Sip Protection are the biggest chainsaw clothing manufacturer in the world and don't make clothing for any body else, they have a range for all budgets and are available from dealers all over the UK.
  • Hi Gary,

I wear SIP Protection trousers and they wear very well and give you plenty of stretch should you climb.

They are not waterproof, but it does take a very long time for water to penetrate.

I have been wearing them for many years now and don't plan to change.
