Barbed wire planning permission

Am I right in thinking that you need planning permission for barbed wire? I've been asked to quote for an extension to an existing fence which is 6ft high welded mesh with 3 strands of barbed wire. Anyone in the know?

  • No, you won't need permission at that height.

I'm sure you can't now place on top of boundary line fence that adjoins a public footpath where the main fence is less than 2.3m high ( to do with injury )

Next problem is that you do need planning permission if your boundary fence is adjacent to a public highway is over 1.5m / 1.8m.

I'm not 100% sure of all the details but one our commercial managing agents was stopped from doing this at s site we maintain for them...
  • There are rules governing barbed wire and footpaths in particular and I quote "Being a nuisance means that it is likely to cause injury to people or animals using the highway." (Its in the link above as well)
As contractors we always maintained the meter rule. A meter away from the footpath, we used to do quite a bit of fencing for West Sussex County Council and they were more than happy with this self imposed rule in an agricultural situation.
