  • My water proofs came from Mountain Warehouse. Their fishing range. Had them for about a year now and there still good.

Warm kit I use the Dickes all in one suite. But you can sweat balls off sometimes.
  • I use breathable waterproof trousers, you don't get all sweaty like other trousers, I only get cheap ones as I end up ripping them. I also live in steel toes wellies this time of year

  • I use a Flexothene hooded jacket and a pair of US army cold weather gortex over trousers....the later are brilliant double thickness knees and seat, easy to put on over any boots and to reach inner pockets once on...

I use my Hiax gortex chainsaw boots with this garb and can splodge through most days if I have to...;-)

  • I can never understand why people will spend hundreds on machinery & so little on clothing.
Footwear is key. All year I wear DeWalt Challenger Gortex Boots - the last pair were £60 online. If it's really cold I switch to my Salomen snow boots - £50 from TK Max. These are lifesavers & keep your feet warm & comfortable down to - 20c.

Again if it's really cold I wear Younstown waterproof winter gloves. They are around £25 online but mine are on their third winter.

The next tip is to get yourself a Lidl or Aldi snowboarding jacket - better than a ski jacket & around £25. Light, breathable & doesn't restrict moment.
  • By the way there are no indications that this winter will be especially cold.
  • After years of buying Dickies/scruffs rubbish that lasts about a week, is badly designed, but widely available, I've treated myself to some proper stuff from Englebert Strauss. I think i'm only going to buy German stuff for anything ever again... its great, every detail really well thought out. Got their es active jacket, (although it does make me look like I'm in the Stasi with a slightly authoritarian shoulder thing going on.) their troosers in a fetching brown colour with work belt and a cracking pair of boots for around £100 which are the first i've had in 10 years that are actually genuinely waterproof and extermely comfortable (and I've spent that sort of money before on Dewalt/DMs/etc that have generally givem up before winter's through).

  • Was also very tempted to get their trousers in the bib and brace style, but thought the ladies might just find it too much of a distraction.

  • I bought a guy cotten bib and braces set (designed for commercial fishing) but they came up so wide without the enough length, so I changed them for a pair of their Pouldo waterproof trousers in glentex. Very good quality not particularly breathable but fine for me to see out a heavy shower or two. Got a glentex jacket as well it was about £70 for both.
Buckler boots, usually get a couple of years out of a pair, having replaced the inner soles and laces a few times. Very well made, warm and waterproof.
Portwest thermal gloves are about £3 a pair somewhere like toolstation, but you can buy ten pairs on Amazon for about £18 delivered.

  • Hi

I'm my opinion, this is the best, probably the most expensive but you only need one layer for the system to work, its truelly incredible.

  • Much more difficult for us ladies, I find. A lot of the time I look like the bag lady from hell. Breathable lined waterproof trousers that I got from Millets before they closed down keep me warm and dry but they drag down when the bottoms are wet which is hugely uncomfortable. Waterproof fleece lined jacket that I got from a discount ski store last winter. Does the biz but ripped already. Brasher boots which cost an arm and a leg but are so comfortable, toasty and waterproof. Thank goodness for the Miss Fiori fleeces I got from Sports Direct just before the cold weather set in - they're brilliant. Golden Touch Winter Touch gloves for exceptionally cold weather and starting off on cold mornings. Great but useless when wet. So then I switch to Town and Country with silk ski liners if my hands are still cold. Will be looking with interest at some of the clothing items already mentioned - but would be great to hear from more of the girlies!
