When to clear large ponds?

A search seems to tell me that there is no easy (chemical) way to effectively clear or significantly reduce excessive weed in a pond and that physical removal is the solution.
Obviously a hot summer day would be the nicest time to do this, but comfort apart, is there an ideal time of year to carry this out to gain the slowest regrowth and maximise the interval between clearing?

  • I think autumn/winter is the best time for this as there is not much UV rays, i.e the sun from now on creating the dreaded blanket weed or weed growth problems.. If the pond has filters a UV light should be added which will kill algae cells forming together which make blanket weed and keeps the water not green and clear.

Another way is to introduce grass carp, is a species of fish that feed on algae and weed and many large lake owners with an excessive weed problem have done this around the world.

but if its a natural wildlife pond , get your wellies or waders on and now is the best time or early spring before the frogs and newts appear! Hope that helps.

  • HI John, What sort of pond is it. Does it have a stock of fish? I use this http://www.pitchcare.com/shop/professional-total-weed-killers/clini...
on stuff like bullrush and other reed type weeds. In water weeds are harder to control with a stock of fish because most chemicals work by removing the oxygen killing the weed but also the fish!

Talk to a company called Spirex Aquatic

  • Never get in a pond unless you are 100 percent sure that you won't damage it especially if it has a liner. Winter is the best time. Leave the weed next to the pond so that any invertebrates can find their way back.
  • Best time is during and after Autumn, do it on a daily bases removing leaves. This will stop them from sinking to the bottom.
