Hi Colin
Might be a good idea to state the exact location?
be careful with issuing notice - you need to give him a dicaplinary and written warning first, and you cannot sack someone for phoning in sick wihtout proof they lied.
You are treading a path here which could cost you an awful lot if not done correctly.
Back ton your main point;
I've found its very much a rareity to get part time staff who are any good - as my current employee shows, he is honest and great, but has flat out said, He needs full time hours or he's off - And I dont blame him - less than 30 hours a week and he isnt earning enough to pay his council tax, bills AND rent.... I pay him £8.75 an hour now.
Full time is somewhat easier as they staff member is likely to have security (you cant get good workers casually i find -0 anyone worth employing will not want the lack of job security). Perhaps keeping your current part timers and putting him on a warning to improove would be the best bet - and advertising for a full time position.
Hi Phil yes good idea! we are based in Stives Cambridgeshire.
David the reason he's part time is that he never turns up on a Monday!and yes he's had all the proper warnings!
If you have employed someone for less than 2 years (ie they are a short serving employee) then they are easy to dismiss should you have just cause.
I would always consult proper legal advice though....an FSB membership can be invaluable at times.
