It's a funny one this, I have one customer who spoils me with a cuppa every hour and biccie's. I'd say all my regulars will make me at least one drink if they are at home. I've only had a few who didn't offer anything and although it's not a big deal I think sometimes a brew and a biscuit can make the world of difference when one is grafting. Equally a cold drink on a hot summers day also does the trick.
It is completely random as you say Andy.
This is one of those issues that can be one extreme or the other imo. i have a new customer this season who makes makes me a brew, along with a triple decker sandwich(!), a large slice of home made cake, a bag of crisps and a couple of chocolate bars for later! i tend time that visit around 1ish for obvious reasons. the other extreme is the client who is always home when i call and although is a lovely person, has never done me a brew in the 8 years ive maintained her garden! If anyone can work that out, let me know! I do carry 2 flasks with me every day just in case, one hot coffee one cold water.
I used to care for a bloke (sadly not with us anymore) who once offered me a "dram" of whiskey - which was about 4 inch deep... It was friday at 5:30 so i thought, why not. I moved his slot to Friday morning a few weeks later as he kept offering me more, when i turned it down he offered brandy instead and got offended if I didnt take it!
Like a brick through a plate glass window! ;)

Just as sure as the van runs on diesel, I run on tea.
Unfortunately I think my maintenance customers (about 80 of them) would think me cheeky to ask for a brew, and if I got one every job I would get no work done and have to ask to use the toilet quite a lot. I'd guess around 7% always make one, about the same sometimes will do but generally speaking, most of them are out or we don't stay long enough to warrant it.
I think in future when landscaping (we just do a bit in the closed season at the moment), I will try Harry's direct approach, or if i'm being polite, ask where we can plug in our kettle after a couple of hours. If the hint isn't taken, maybe asking if they can put our milk in the fridge, Is that a bit passive-aggressive, I don't know?
Love the cup Rob! I was on a Big job (subbing) a few years ago, when after hours of sweating on a hot day one of the lads said "any chance of a brew?" to the home owner, to which he calmly replied "No because i dont want my cups getting dirty!" You couldnt make it up.
Now if you want to debate the best biccie it must the choice of milk or dark chocolate digestive, especially the customer supplied type....
There. Said it. It's out there now :D
Strictly speaking and in my defence a Jaffa Cake is a cake not a biscuit, so I can plead here that the best biscuit is not in fact a Jaffa Cake (cos it's not a biscuit) but a Hob Nob particularly the milk chocolate ones!
