  • Hi James,

I'd spray with SBK/Round Up, give it 10 days then get the bulk on the larger section down to 2ft with a hedge cutter then clear remainder with a brushcutter and treat regrowth Round Up/SBK again. If you haven't got a pitch fork and a thick pair of gauntlet gloves they'll make it much easier on your body!

You'll just have to be careful that there isn't metal etc hidden under the brambles.

  • It's too late in the season for systemic weedkillers to work IMO.

Cut it all back, and agree a programme to deal with the regrowth in the spring. There's no point using chemicals when the plants are going in to their dormant winter state.

Hedge cutting it out in sections so you can get it right down to the ground and then if it's not full of litter/bottles etc. brushcutter it right down to the ground or pass over it with a rough mower and then treat the regrowth in spring.

  • I think it's to late for weedkiller although the council have just done the kerbs in colchester!!

I thought it would be hedge cutter job :/
  • Agree with most of above, hedgecutter. I'd allow 4 hours plus a trailer full of waste. Likely to be quicker than that though. Dig out the woody stems/roots, spray the floppy stuff in spring (nettles).

Yes hedgecutter now for bramble and ivy and wait for leaf growth in spring then spray Blaster Pro - higher Triclopyr than SBK and very effective on brambles & nettles.

Hedge cutter in slices, check for unexpected debris, and repeat until done. Brush cut down to ground. Apply suitable weed killer in spring.
  • mini digger and pull it out simple 1/2 day job

  • In general I'm with the consensus so far, but that does depend on why it's being cleared?

Mark, in working day terms, would you please explain the difference between 4 hours and half a day, along with any possible environmental, efficiency or cost advantages a digger my offer over the earlier solutions in this case?

  • i think for an experienced digger operator maybe its quicker but for me probably a hedge cutter!!

Basically I have been told that I'm supposed to maintain this land. but have never been told about this previously. resident complained as nettles have spread into her garden from around sub station and also because they were above her fence line. there is lots of rubbish in there, seems to have become a dumping ground! :/ clearance now and treat next spring will be fine
