Looks like it might be a Datura.
If it is, the leaves will often smell like beef gravy if rubbed between your fingers!!
Thanks guys - Nicandra Physalodes it is. Think I will collect some seeds for next year, we have some big spaces to fill where we have reclaimed ground from some very overgrown shrubs on some of our larger gardens.
It is Nicandra - it's a very common surprise arrival in gardens, we're often asked about it. The seed is commonly included in commercial bird seed mixes, and so gets 'deposited' all over the place!
Datura grows in abundance here...but it's not to be messed with;)
