Occasional Loss of Power and Smoke - LDV

My 1998 LDV 2.5 is a treat to drive usually - I think because she is rear wheel drive.
Every few months, however, I will be toddling along when suddenly she loses virtually all power and emits lots of white smoke both under bonnet and from exhaust. I struggle at about 10mph to somewhere to stop, switch off for 5 minutes and she (so far) starts up and runs as normal. Thought it might be dirty fuel as a couple of times it has happened when fuel has been lowish and I have had a steep hill, but in last incident tank was over half full and we had been level for several miles.
Anybody any ideas?

    Theres an air filter for the EGR valve. Follow the air intake tube from the EGR and you should find a small tube housing, theres a foam filter in it. Pop the cap off and clean the filter. That was a problem I had with old ldv. Computer kept saying the EGR valve was goosed but it turned out to be the filter was choked. If its not that the it could be the EGR valve itself. They cost around £180 and take 10 mins to fit.
