New Employee's

I am just about to take on two employee's possibly through the governments wage incentive scheme. Does anyone have any experience of this scheme?

This would mean two people with no experience but that's ok because I would be looking for labourers to train up.

Does anyone have any sage advice on do's and don'ts, interview questions or anything you've learnt from experience.

Thanks in advance

  • Here's a few:

Ask for references and possibly follow them up.
Ask if they have any long standing ailments/illnesses.
Stress that punctuality and reliability is imperative (as long as you are!)
Don't pay sick pay - apart from SSP.
    Non smokers.
Stress you will not allow phone use, apart from in their break time.
If you don't provide clothing, warn them about what they will need.

Include some of the above on the application form to cover yourself in case of porkies.

Once you have taken them on, make sure YOU are always ahead with their holidays. It works out at roughly 9 days work = 1 day holiday(scary isn't it?!)

  • Im from scotland. I took on a lad through a charity organisation caller Barnaddos. Ive had £1500 from barnaddos, then about to claim for around £2200 after his 23'rd week.

Works out around half his wages covered in the first 6'ish months.

  • Thank you all for your reply's some good advice here. Thanks Colin at first glance these can seem basic but its surprising what you can forget when under the spotlight.
In this case the interviewer will be just as nervous as the interviewee I think.

Unfortunately your right Andy I am to late for the wage incentive scheme and I have been offered the apprentice scheme instead. I am considering this and I will take you up n the PM thanks.

I wasn't able to find any info on the Barnaddos scheme Matt maybe that's a Scotland only thing?

I will be starting the interview process in October so anymore advice will be gratefully received.
