Mitigating vibration when using machinery

Was wondering if anyone has any working ideas at reducing vibrations from Petrol Hedge Trimmers over prolonged periods.

I know the hedge trimmer we use isnt exactally great (http://www.ryobi-direct.com/acatalog/Ryobi_28cc_Petrol_HedgeTrimmer_RHT2660DA.html), but after about 15mins use, I feel that I've been exposed to too much vibration.

We have not yet aquired a strimmer, as we have not been offered a job which will require one, but id imagine the issues are the same.

  • share the work-load, take breaks , buy the pro~flex gloves (best ones that actually work) dont waste money on others.

    buy a commercial like stihl
  • Unfortunately, the main thing is to buy a decent hedgetrimmer.......... it really does pay off...... far less vibration and I've never actually worn a Stihl one out....... obviously, replaced blades, but they just go on and on...... like the wife!!

What the other folks have said, make sure you take regular breaks no prolonged use , take a break to tidy up cuttings as WFV isn't pleasant know a few older guys who have circulation problems in their hands due to excessive use of equipment (daren't put vibrating equipment as usual suspects would turn this this thread smutty using all sorts of inuendos LOL ;o) ).
  • thanks - We initially thought the Ryobi would be a good starter choice, but I'm deff of the opinion now that its near rubish. Cash flow is tight so may have to wait to get a decent one but hey, its better than personal injury.
Going to have to ebay it, a little anoying but it vibrates enough to cause me alot of discomfort after 15 mins, to the extent I have to stop useing it. Good news is theres no planned need upcoming at the moment. Going to order some anti - vib gloves today anyway, will be useful :)
  • I'm going to the docs for a checkup on my achilies tendon (old injury) on thurs, and will ask about this, as i deffinatly experienced tingling and slight numbness.
I will be running it past my partner / and flatly refusing to touch it again, as two days on my wrist still hurts slightly if I twist it counter-clockwise.
Might get £75 if were lucky as its clean and still have the box / reciept.

Best advice is ebay it and get a stihl HS86, unlike the ryobi it will last, farr more productive as longer blade and more power and 3/4 less vibrations.

What you've got is a totally crap domestic machine built to a price and with almost zero vibration damping, designed to be used once or twice a year for a couple of hours not 6 hours a day 5 days a week like the HS86. Vibration gloves are not the solution here.

If your intending on doing this job long term then invest in proper kit and look at the manufacturers specd vibration levels before you buy.... otherwise you will undoubtedly get carpal tunnel / VWS. If your feeling tingling etc after 15 mins then this is actual nerve damage.

Same thing applies to all machines, as a rule you get what you pay for, if you buy the cheapest then it will be!
