Marking out school football pitch

Hi all.
I've recently been asked to quote on maintaining a schools grounds.
All seems fine (although I will need to buy another mower), but my main concern is - how difficult is it to mark out a school football pitch, and running tracks?
It's for a primary school. How expensive is the equipment, and how long will marking out take?
With regards to the mower, the school requires that the grass is collected. Any suggestions - must be able to collect in the wet.
Thanks all.

Download a copy of the Fleet Line Marking specs for sports ground marking out. They have every pitch you'll need: http://www.flmuk.com/resources/brochure/Fleet_Sport_Marking_Booklet...

We used to mark all the sports grounds for Petersfield Town Council. This is he most sophisticated bit of equipment we used.

  • Hi Sean and Phil,

Do you use any chemical mixed in with the paint to burn off the grass as you mark so you can clearly see where you have been when it come to reapplying the paint and not needing to measure it all out again? We have heard of people doing this, but just wondered if it is common practise?

We have Whippet, that while it is marketed as a Horsetail or Marestail killer, it would also be a good product for line marking too. This is an alternative brand to third party brands such as Kurtail®, KIBOSH™ and HARVEST®

If you need any mmore information or feedback, please get in touch.

    cheers Ollie

  • Is it all on grass?
We used to use the one pictured above for grass and a battery one for all weather surfaces ( necessary to clean out after every marking as the paint blocked the nozzle). Every 2 weeks was the procedure . real pain to have the paint dissapear completly and start again from scratch. Firstly we lined out the pitches and used a neat solution of sports marker ( it used to stay in a lot longer as it wasnt just over marking ) then a fifty paint fifty water solution. real pain to have the paint dissapear completly and start again from scratch.
  • Marked out loads of them when I worked for Harrow council. Used Phils wonderful marking machine..... or one very similar..... cost about £300 now I believe. .... For the initial mark on running tracks, I used to reckon a couple of people and a couple of hours. Football pitches a couple of people and an hour. You need 2 people to set out the curves/circles. For the regular overmarking, only one person needed........ 20 minutes for the football and about 45 for the track...... assuming its 400 metres 8 lane.

  • Thanks guys, that looks tricky. How difficult is it to achieve a straight line?
Where would I get the equipment from?

  • Straight lines are easy...Use a string pulled tight and run the marker over the string.........curves are trickier and thats where you need the 2 people.......type in "football pitch markers" into Google and various ones are listed.

  • The FA changed a lot of football pitch sizes for the younger age groups last year. You can download a pdf copy of their guide by searching for "The FA Guide To PiTch And GoAlPosT dimensions".
The best explanation I have found for marking out a pitch is on a thread in an (inferior) forum:http://www.pitchcare.com/message/message/4537
I use standard emulsion watered down rather than any sportsmarker any usually add a drop of glyphosate so it will last the season as the pitches i do are only infeequently over-marked during the season.

  • The curves are easy enough just a peg in the centre and a piece of wire string pulled taught. 1 person marking can be done with a spray can held close to the ground tied to the end and place a few dots every now and then ( follow them with the marker afterwards. ) the same goes for running tracks ( dependant on distance ). Youll be fine its really easy to get the hang of after a couple of times. Also you can buy carrots ( not sure if this is the technical name ) that tap into the ground to keep your corners and straight lines ( no measuring from then on )
