logistics problem

I am trying to price a job and need to fill raised beds with around ten tonnes of soil.Trouble is, the beds are around three metres high up on a raised area at the back of a garden with no steps or means of access.I've considered crane hire but can't find prices. Some sort of travellator but no idea what to search for on google.Any other ideas?

  • Conveyor belt system you mean like roofers use?
Also what about a petrol 4x4 wheel barrow they can carry 1/3 ton
  • The roofing conveyors are designed to move roof tiles. Shifting 10 tonnes of soil would be a challenge!

Build a ramp, and barrow it up? Easy job for a scaffold company.

Next question is what on earth are they going to plant? I'd love to see a picture of this, as it sounds like a really interesting project.

  • Will have to be one hell of a ramp but to be honest I think its the cheapest and most realistic option so far.
    Its for fruit and veg.
Pictures to follow if it goes ahead.
  • If there's no steps or means of access, how the hell are they going to grow fruit and veg??

  • I used to be a roofing contractor many moons ago and have used Conveyor belt systems a lot. Although they work well bumping out tiles, the belt is very flexible. The weight of the soil could be an issue for the free running of the belt. Also if you can get it working it will fill up fairly quickly and require re-positioning often.

    Kind Regards

  • I meant means of easy access for the soil.
The client just climbs up. Its a gabion wall three high up to another level. So kind of steps but with a metre high raise for each one!
Think I'll price for a scaffolder to build a massive ramp.
  • So, to grow fruit and veg, needing at least daily access to watering and harvesting, the client is going to be shinning up 1m gabions like they are steps??

I'd be quoting high. They are clearly completely mad.... :-)

The ramp wouldn't be massive. A 1-in-3 would only be 9 metres long. No worse than a board up to a skip to wheel a barrow up.

  • would this sort of thing be Any good http://www.maceindustries.co.uk/shifta-portable-conveyor.htm as you can hire them
