Highways laws on deliveries of tonne bags

Just wondered what the law is on deliveries of Tonne bags of soil on the kerbside or pavement, or does it vary from region to region.Anyone know procedures and best way forward thanks, I have 2 tonne bags which I can only get delivered on kerbside or pavement due to access to site being difficult, also it's quite a narrow street, any help thanks

  • How long will it have to sit on the pavement?

  • Max 2 hrs
  • should be fine, only problem is blocking up the road while he is unloading.

  • if the material's were staying there for a considerable length of time then strictly speaking you may need a permit for it from the local council in the same way for a skip licence, however in all my years of doing it we have never needed one or had any request for one, nor has any other tradesman I know. if they enforced it the whole industry would grind to a halt and the whole system would as the councils would never be able to cope with the amount of applications they got

we only ever get them put on the kerbside or the verge, never the pavement.

  • Thanks kerbside with cones ??
  • if you want to be belt and braces, but I wouldn't worry too much

  • Kerbside with cones and tape, for 2 hours I don't think u would get any problems anyway, the delivery driver legally can be in any place for 20minutes whilst loading or unloading providing it's not doing anything illegal ie. double yellows or restricted time zones etc etc
  • As above permit and cones if you are worried. In my experience the problem comes from pedestrians unwilling to pass without some caustic comments as to your blocking of the path!!
