They are useful for doing between slabs that have no pointing, weeds growing in cracks in concrete, gaps right next to house walls.
We have been using them for many years, we get gas from Go Outdoors or Lidl / Aldi.
The weed does remain on the surface, but none of our customers has ever mentioned this.
They also useful in the borders where plants such as Toadflax, Foxglove, Poppies, Wood Avens, Germander Speedwell, etc produce multiple fast growing seedling plants, they can be dealt swiftly before they can grow much, saving a lot of time.
We often charge our customers for the gas as an extra.
I used one for clearing weeds in block paving with no vegetation nearby (this was one of the pressurised paraffin models that sound like a jet engine).
Effective, but not very discerning, with the optional cover/flame spreader; you only need to pass over the weed until it changes colour to kill the weed. No need to stand there and 'nuke' the weeds - it wastes effort and can leave an oily soot stain on paving that is hard to get off.
One point to remember, you will not be covered under you PL insurance for any damage or fire unless you declare it ... then watch your premiums rise as you are using 'naked flames' in the course of your work. Then you get into risk assessments/work methods and fire extinguishes to hand :-( and FM's get real itchy about it...
Personally from experience, - If you visit the garden every week, a Hoe or Swoe is quicker, even if you dont see a weed, hoe the soil, no weeds after about 3 months and as long as you keep doing it, you get no more weeds.... Everyone wins.
On fortnightly jobs, its more difficult, a hoe will work well but the odd weed will still need hand pulling.
weed burners are useless in border areas as its so easy to burn plants, you spend more time working around the plants you want to keep that you waste time.
I'll stick to Chikara :)
I have a Sheen X300 and I find even with the heat shield it does some collateral damage to plants close by due to the heat it generates. For borders and my veg plot I use a dutch hoe or hand fork/onion hoe etc.
It is good for large areas, but you need to give them a blast wait a few days the blast again. But remember the root structure is still intact. My method is glyphosate let it die back then burn off the dying vegetation.
Its also very thirsty on paraffin and heavy after using over a period of time.
