Another idea might be Woodblocx
I have used them once or twice for planters and raised beds, but they are able to do a retaining wall kit as well. If your client wants a more natural look.
They appeared on dragons den

The problem is that the existing retaining wall is curved, in fact I don't think any of it is straight. The other option I have is sleepers on their ends, but I need to price for both.
Ben
Gabions are not a bad option however it takes a while to put each gabion together and fill.. especially if you have 200 to make. Me and my apprentice built and filled 20 x 1 metre in length gabions in 2 days. However the site wasn't easy to work with. It destroys your fingers as well.
Sleepers again are not a bad option and would be a lot quicker to install however they wouldn't be as strong or have the lifespan.
Thanks for the info Matt. So approx 10m per day for 2 people? The garden is quite large and the stone to fill will have to be narrowed some way :(
I will price based on this for now and see what the figures look like.
i would just to be safe.. its fairly labour intensive and it takes time layering the stone to make it look nice!
I've only done decorative gabions once, assuming that's what you want?
It took a surprisingly long time to build the outer layers up, with hardcore in the centre where it's not visible. Filling them with the expensive decorative stone would have been far faster, and if it's local, cheap stone, then it would have been cheaper overall.
i reckon you would be doing very well to get 10m done in a day. Id say 5m max from building them up to filling them especially if you have any distance from stone to gabion
wouldnt it be simpler, cheaper and quicker just to build a dry stone wall? afterall if your filling gabions to be decorative,i.e. facing the stone up to the gabions outside faces, you may as well set up a string line for a freehand wall and work to that, and finish the wall with a mortared on coping? just an idea!
It took me ages to build Gabions, very labour intensive. I would say 5m a day as well max. I would also price by day as these sort of things overrun. They look great but not sure I would rush back to do another one.
You also have to be very careful about stone bulging from the side frame. Ideally you want it perfectly flat all the way along the face. It doesn't always stack up nice and neat. Best of luck with it.I think having spoken to the other gardener who does the maintenance at the garden, that gabions might be too expensive for the client. We may well just be replacing the old rotten poles with new non rotten poles :)
I have attached a couple of pics to show what the situation is if any one has any other ideas.
