Mice... Rabbits and Squirrels
squirrels will pick the fruit and eat it... may explain the tops on the ground. They are also easy able to beat netting... not many kind ways of keeping them off Im afraid... if they want they will try to get.
Hi Sarah, it could be hedgehogs, they do like fruit or even a small Fox if it's hungry and can get under the net, Strawberry's are an easy meal especially for a young one. Unfortunately it's not just just us humans and birds that like those little gems.

Same problem here Sarah, 2x 30M rows with not enough left to fill a bowl. The netting which had been pegged down had been eaten through in several places. Even with a fuller crop I reckon the net cost more than the strawberries so ripping them out this autumn and going to grow more gooseberries and currants which don't get so badly eaten even when not under a net.
And to think I used to like Secret Squirrel
I caught my dog eating the first ripe ones on our plants the other day!
at least what ever it was had deceancy to eat the lot, weve got so many slugs with the rain that they are eating into the nice soft centre and leaving the shell of the strawberry, luckily im growing some in a pipe of the ground which seems to be working.
