Trouble is Ben one of the two fungi that affect the plant Cylindrocladium buxicola was only identified just over ten years ago and is still under study. None of the chemical solutions are 100% effective. Prevention is probably your best bet. Top dress in spring and apply a fungicide make sure all fallen leaves are removed as this is where the spores will lie and dont prune in warm humid weather. Plants already affected prune hard back and burn clippings then disinfect tools.
"Thanks Chris, yes I agree a total nightmare. let me know how you get on with bokashi and actiferm. All the best"
Thanks Jason, that's great advice. yes I am starting to look at damage limitation. So far it has only spread to two hedges and hasn't hit the large box balls. In areas I think the poor air circulation have a lot to do with it, many of the hedges have been laid out to close to other plants. Cheers
Hi, this is how they manage at Chateau Villandry in France
This has been brought up a couple of times Ben.. type "box blight" into the LJN search box for a little more info -
Thanks Pete,
Have read a good few discussions, came across a good one on using covershield and having good success with it. but hoping someone had some advice on the dosing regime.
Many Thanks
Just Read that link Pete, very interesting reading, they certainly have to be on top of the blight over there.
Many Thanks
Firstly, are you sure it is blight? Most of these cases are downy mildew in Aug/ Sept where spacings are close. Fubol Gold & Amistar are useful fungicides
We used Scotts Octave which contains Procloraz as a wettable powder and found it quite effective at controlling the blight. Sprayed it every two weeks.
Need to get dead leaves off plant and let air in to help dry up infection.
Don't trim it as often anymore, seems to help.
Unfortunately, I appear to have a problem with Box Blight in plants I put in in the spring.
At first I did wonder if it was my dog - as I saw him peeing over the plants - but alas I think it's blight.
I think one of the main problems was the plants were very young and tender and had not been hardened off and therefore susceptible.
Here's hoping I too can find a solution.
