  • I thought about it as i tow a 3.5 ton tri axel ifor trailer loaded, with a transit tipper. There are days i work between 80-120 miles away and the thought of towing the trailer because i couldent fit all the gear in the back of a 4 by 4.

    Sticking to the tipper.

Pro's and cons i suppose depends on what work you do and if you haul heavy loads

I had a 26 year old Land Rover 90 when I started out. I loved it, it would go anywhere, do anything, you could stand on it, throw anything in it (as long as it would fit). However, it was scruffy, leaked oil, belched smoke and broke down often. As much as I loved my landy, I knew it didn't give the impression I wanted.

So, reluctantly I sold it. I bought a VW transporter van and it is the one of best investments I've made in my business. You can fit everything in it, it does 33mpg, it's sign written and looks smart and professional. And I haven't needed 4 wheel drive in the 4 years I've had it :-)
  • See a pull a big 14ft by 7ft trailer it's get 4ft meshed side never do any jobs any bigger to warrant a bigger trailer. M my tools fit in the 4x4 as the rear seats fold up just don't know how customers perceive it .
  • My second problem is that I can't afford to run to vehicles only 23 insurance is a killer on commercial insurance. So if I get a van I'll be using that all the time.
  • I have an l200 with an ifor canopy, its just a toy, i've used it once for work when my vam was in for mot.

Its rubish to work out of, but carries 2 izys a strimmer and a kombi.

I go shooting so its for that really.

Pickups are useful for comfort and towing.

    That's about it.
  • Used to have a wee Suzuki Jimny commercial which was used 6 times a year maximum. Gave it to my brother who traded it for a 90 which he now uses for work and I am on insurance for rare use too. When I had the jimny it was used spraying , and woodland work, but I certainly manage without it easily. Just miss adventures in it; was a big toy for me- had lift kit, snorkel, etc for playtime!
  • I went from a van to a Toyota Hilux Double cab with a canopy...I can carry all the stuff I need, I popped the rear seat out and made a tool box to bolt in it's place..in the back I can fit two strimmers (D and cow horn) hedge cutter + long arm, Flymo, chainsaw, back pack blower all the fuel spades forks rakes and more...the only thing I need a trailer for is my Honda roller mower but tbh I only mow one day a week so pointless dragging that about all week as I used to do, I don't take waste away...ladders on the roof rack.

It's comfy, good looking, versatile..I can seat five if I want..all the crap is kept in the back. ok you don't use 4WD every day but handy when you need it, dragged an old caravan out of a customers field the other day..and beleive me short of a tractor nothing else was going to get it out !!!

I say drive what you want and make it work for you.

  • good answer mark, I believe its more to do with the type of work you do. A problem ive found with the tipper is at the dump where i tip my waste, its a farm and often the track to the dump has been ripped up by a tractor, makes it tricky and often get stuck.

  • ;-) a van is VERY conveinient...but can also make you lazy..ie it's a space so you fill it ! I did..although organized I found I carried everything all of the time and then had to depack it to get to what I wanted..I did have a moment where I thought I'd done the wrong thing with the pickup, but a bit of thought and stuff was overcome..in fact I like my new working arrangement..now I have a 1 ton braked trailer which is very useful for logs and all the associated dross that you can lob in a trailer..so it now has 4WD, trailer, comfort, people carrying ability !!

But if you carried waste then a tipper would be invaleuable ! but they do make tipping trailer too..in fact you can even have a pickup tipper ;-)
