  I remember a conversation between the Chris/Presidents of APL, BALI and SGD in 2005 where we decided to bring up the issue at respective board meetings - all to dismay from members. There are subtleties of trade vs professional recognition that I never expected and still don't understand. Anyway, I think you are right, if we don't work with others we'll fall behind and if garden designers don't get more collaborative they'll lose business to landscapers.

  There's still a lot of work to do as the landscape's literally changed forever. Thankfully for all of us, BALI, SGD, APL and LI are no longer calling the shots as though they 'are' the market.
  
  I'll continue to call for collaboration between ALL parties through Landscape Juice. I think the aforementioned are listening and know there needs to be change and I'm afraid, if there isn't significant movement in an acceptable time frame, it's they (and not us) that will fall further behind.
  
  It was a good call on your part though and I'm sure we'll all welcome some progress.

  "I've been noticing a tendency for one part of our industry to knock another recently. For example the Garden Design Journal columnist who talks about 'real gardeners' knocking garden designers but himself knocks garden designers in favour of landscape architects. Then there are garden designers being less than supportive of landscape contractors and vice versa - one designer recently told me she "treats all landscapers with contempt". On the surface its all hunky dory with joint SGD/APL/BALI days out and at a grass roots level there are great relationships across the different specialisms - because that's what we are, specialists. So why the put downs events and why, when we all trying to keep our heads above water during the toughest economic condition can't everyone be a bit more supportive? We need to bond as professionals, to have a united voice and maintain the high standards of our industry. "
  
  Landscape Juice's been trying to flatten the playing ground for over five years now Andrew.

  Hi Andrew,
  
  I was at A.B.C. 1990-93 studying the, then, HND in Landscape & Horticultural Technology. I did a design thesis (the design of theraputic gardens in the grounds of the modern hospice) and Paul was also my allocated staff for this too.
  
  Re: Paul's submission for this year's Chelsea, I have no doubt it will be an 'hmm, intersting design concept'! I look forward to seeing it :-)
