The Canna species have several advantages over their hybrid relations. Many hybrids are sterile but species Canna can be grown easily from seed and an early sowing will produce huge flowering plants within 6-8 months. Canna species have a special elegance of form and are more likely to shed their flowers neatly than the larger flowering hybrids.
These fabulous plants are wonderfully versatile - try growing them as specimen patio plants in large containers or evergreen conservatory subjects. Cannas can be used as seasonal bedding plants then lifted and stored like dahlias during the winter, and in Mediterranean and other warm regions they make superb permanent herbaceous plantings. Some can even be grown as marginal aquatic plants for ponds and lakes.
