How do you build a floating wooden bench?

I'm very excited - my first floating wooden bench - but HOW?!! I've heard that there are special bolts/clamps/fasteners??? Can anyone give me more information?? This is what we want it to look like
Design of garden

My stone mason said we can notch a gap in harling in the house and build into the other side of the wall (holding the sides up) but I really don't like the idea of fixing it to the house - we are building the walls out of blockwork and I would rather fix the floating wooden seat to only the blockwork wall!!!

Thanks for any and all help!!!

Perhaps just add further frames?

Oak will be heavy and you will need to make sure the seat can take the weight of several people.

Phil, yes, that's what I'd like to achieve but with oak - so it will be alot heavier than an ikea shelf!!! We can embed one side in our blockwork wall but I'm worried about 4-6 people sitting on this and not holding the weight of the oak and the people. I've spoken to one local joiner and he said he didn't know how it was done!!!! Thanks for your advice - maybe I'll see if there is something like the ikea metal frames that can hold heavier weights.

Hi Angelique

I think I know what you are wanting to achieve. It seems like a cantilever system would work best but that would require the greater amount of bench material to be embedded into the wall.

We bought a shelf from Ikea a couple of years ago which is mounted onto iron bars which are fixed to the wall using two large bolts. The shelf, which has two holes drilled into it, is slid over the metal bars.

Here it is on an Ikea video
