Today I swung by a well-known chain of designer discount brands looking for a birthday present for my eldest daughter and came across two deck chairs. The canvass pattern was eye catching with lovely soft head rests, they were the same Danish make as the ones that I bought last summer for my garden which have a great ‘safe’ locking mechanism. Well mine do.

After reading the invitiation placed on the chair, which read ‘feel free to sit on the garden furniture’, I duly did after first checking that the chair was locked into position.

The noise was quite astounding as my coccysx followed by the back of my head hit the unforgiving tiles. I lay there for quite some time unable to move and a little confused when a very nice elderly man asked, “You all right love?” I was and I am after a few self-prescribed concoctions of painkillers.

The deck chairs stayed in the shop after a swift Basil style kicking but two reliable and very fixed wooden chairs will adorn my daughter’s garden.

Neither! Thinking design over function is sometimes painful and just because you are invited to, don't!!
