January storms, trees and things

I have been up since 6am, unable to sleep due to the intense winds battering the landscape. I have been listening to people's bins being blown over, bottles flying along the road, branches cracking, chimneys howling (not falling, thankfully) and greenhouse glass smashing.

The M8 motorway in Glasgow city centre has been closed due to overturned lorries, the bridges are closed, gusts reported started at 60mph at 7am this morning but the latest one is 95 and rising. Now my back fence has…

Winter gardening in Brighton

So 2011 is well and truly under way and I am really pleased to be working and still taking orders, such an improvement from last year! ...despite the snow.  D Faulkner Garden Services goes from strength to strength! Let's hope that there is no more snow this season.  Lots of clearances of overgrown gardens, fencing, a big patio project and a nice sleeper wall/ flowerbed construction to boot.  I have done some work on my website while I couldn't work because of the snow and rain, and this has… Continue

Lawn services around Glasgow

Grass cutting has really picked up for the business now. I have just taken delivery of a new Masport Rotorola that everyone seems to be talking about and tomorrow it's getting it's first test on a private housing estate I maintain. Good thing is the site is roadside so plenty passers-by should see the good work.

Looking for ways to purchase extra lawn equipment. I have a good hire station nearby and have been making weekly visits for scarifiers and a lovely camon aerator (£2.5k… Continue

Lawn treatments

I have been getting a few calls for lawn treatment work this week. The grass is growing properly now and you get that fresh-cut smell whilst out mowing.

I have assessed a few lawns recently that have become very compacted due to clay soils. remedies have included hollow tine aeration, and manual aeration and 'lifting' of the turf using a fork (creating a small air space underneath the top 10cm of soil which improves air flow at the root zone). Clients have been happy to see dead moss… Continue
