Visit in israel

Just back from israel a week ago,

10 days with family and brilliant friends that try to help a lot. The Localls blamed me for bringing the winter to them as the temp just dropped from nice 26 to 19 with 200 mm of rain in 4 days (more than third of annual quantity). For me it was lovely 19cel.

One of the exciting things for me was to see my grand dad that riched 99, still fairly clear and care about us.  A book with the story of his live was printed and I had few tears…

Pleach Tree Installation

We are very glad that the weather has been good for us, the last few days have seen us install a row of pleached carpinus to start the final phase of planting on one of our projects.

The preparation work started over 7 days ago when the site was carefully marked out, holes dug and 3 skip loads of awful material removed (see skip contents) a large delivery of planting soil and tree and shrub compost was also delivered. The base and sides of the tree pit were loosened as best as…

Protect Your Artificial Pitch from Frost this Winter

Although synthetic surfaces are often described as being suitable for all weathers, just like any outdoor facility a synthetic surface will be susceptible to extreme weather conditions such as harsh frost. Playrite Area Manager Sean Colbert has put together some information below on why pitches freeze, how you can prevent frost occurring and most importantly how to protect your pitch throughout the winter.

Why are artificial pitches affected by…

Haileybury makes light of its leaf problem thanks to battery blower

Autumn leaf fall is a massive problem to Eamonn Murphy, Grounds and Gardens Manager at Haileybury, one of the UK’s leading boarding schools, in Hertfordshire. Credentials & Credibility in the trade

We are pleased to be able to offer our guys the opportunity to become NVQ qualified through Marshalls. Anything that gives our industry credibility is a positive!

As there are so many un-qualified landscapers/ pavers/ installers in the industry giving us a bad name. Being on the Marshalls register is great for our credentials and all the extras Marshalls offer make it a fantastic option. Keep it up Marshalls!

Something for nothing - courses and cuttings

Something for nothing always goes down well with clients, I find, and the Garden Design Academy has been attempting to provide just that this week.

Residential courses were the surprise success of 2011 and as a result we have been able both to reduce the price of the courses for 2012 and host them more often. There are five residential courses currently offered, compared to eighty home study courses, so there is great potential to…

Designing for cave dwellers

I used to live in Brittany, where I worked for a while on a plant nursery. One day while weeding the pots of Azaleas, my boss pointed at the hedge, saying ‘regardes, troglodyte!’ , which I translated as ‘look, a cave dweller!’. Puzzling: life in rural Brittany could sometimes feel like going back in time, but not to that extent.…

A funny old game

Its been a hard year starting off with a severe winter, very hot spring, a very wet summer and a reasonable autumn. Lets hope this winter is kinder to us. tree climbing and landscaping is a hard job at the best of times but bad weather makes tree climbing that bit more hazardous and landscaping sometimes impossible.  In between all of this I relocated! Trying to build up a business again in a new location isn't easy and yet, here I am, still surviving. It's a funny old game but don't we just…

If the hedgehog becomes extinct who will be to blame?

There have been many comments via blogs and via those peripheral voices of the countryside that the British public are apathetic towards the threats to the UK countryside, its flora and fauna and further the biodiversity of the world. Are they? I don’t believe they are and the monumental flow of money equivalent to a small countries’ GDP into conservation NGOs suggest otherwise. The huge public surge of anger towards the ‘Forest Sell Off’, was quickly manipulated by some NGOs, who ended up…
