Find "Mising Profit". Are you using a markup or a margin?

Most contractors check their books at the end of the year and find themselves wondering:

“Where did my profit go?”

There’s often more than one answer to that question, but this question brings us to one very common answer: Whoever is pricing the work doesn’t understand the difference between a profit markup and a profit margin.

Do you understand the difference? Here’s a quick test:

What’s 15% profit on service…

Why Poppies at Remembrance?

Poppies symbolise remembrance because they often cover battlefields once the guns fall silent. But why? Poppy seeds only germinate in freshly dug soil. All those squaddies’ bootprints, shell holes and tank tracks churn up the ground forcing any poppy seeds buried in soil up to the surface where the…

Cleaning slippery paths for the winter

As winter approaches and the leaves fall, people find this is time of year when slips trips and falls occur on slippery paths.Power washing removes atmospheric pollution moss and algae returning the paving to a nearly new state. Many people have a domestic powerwasher which is ideal for small areas but can be time consuming on larger areas or areas prone to puddling. A flat surface or rotary cleaner keeps the mess on the ground, rather than on the windows.

Professional paving restoration…

Cost Savings of Green Roofs

I recently subscribed to Dave Hilary's course of Green Roof Lessons via his website www.greenroofplan.com and I have to say, I like the way he breaks down the benefits of green roofing into simple, easily understood, bite-sized pieces.

Here's an extract from "Lesson 2, Extensive Green Roofs are an Easy Call"

The cost-benefit analysis is likely to be your driving factor

behind choosing an extensive green roof. The factors to… Continue

Registering a gardening business

We've come to post five in 'How to start and run a landscape or gardening business and it's probably the easiest and simplest one.

Whilst online forums are a great resource for researching how and when to start a business, it is always the safest route to get professional help from an accountant and a lawyer because no two business or people are exactly the same or will be working the same way so they can evaluate YOU and advise on a structure that suits you and you… Continue

SUDs legislation has lead to a increase in options for permeable paving when taking up your garden to add extra parking spaces or make it maintenace free.

Block paving -laid on a screed of gritsand is many peoples favourite method-but the sand washes away and the joints fill with atmospheric pollution causing weeds and moss regrowth.

Stabilised gravel is becomming popular because of its decorative nature, ease of installation and maintenace. The ground is prepared in the conviential…

Coppice and coppicing for fuel. The need to consult a land management practitioner

I know of very few land management practitioners who work with coppice, it is still regarded as a niche and specialist trade, associated with woodsmen. And despite a rise in coppice growing for self sufficiency purposes it is a market largely ignored by landscapers and even foresters in general. In my believe there is a strong future as a market for coppice planting for all those involved in horticulture and land management in…

My 3 favourite shrubs for autumn reflowering

When it gets to late October and we've had the first frosts, it's great to find shrubs that you might have dismissed, giving you another flush of flowers.

Choisya ternata can give great glossy foliage and a second flush of flowers with a whiff of scent if the air gets warm enough, - but only if you don't prune it. - It is a large bush, so leave it at least 2metres in space all round, and this will give you evergreen foliage and 2 lots of flowers a… Continue

Winter garden fencing problems

Garden fencing is something which you don’t really think about and take for granted

about 90% of the time. It is usually not until one of your fence panels is blown down in a gale, or a concrete fence post cracks during the

winter frost that you suddenly give your garden fencing any attention at all. Other

damage that the long British winters can inflict on your fencing includes;

wooden fence posts rotting,…
