Chelsea 2012: My thoughts (part 2).....

It is difficult to pick a favourite and so instead let me share a few of my favourite images of gardens, and areas of larger gardens, from this year’s Chelsea Flower Show.

Cleve West’s Garden won Best in Show by doing something that felt that little bit different from the other main Show Gardens; I liked the use of topiary, the structure, the contrasting stonework at the back of the garden and the richness of the planting…

Chelsea 2012: My thoughts....

This year the sun shone again for Chelsea. There for just after 8am the hoards had already descended (although this year it felt like far more people were there - not far off of the 150,000 people expected for the week). As a designer Chelsea has become a place of pilgrimage, but was it worth it?…

RHS Chelsea: where are the 99%?

The environmentalist John Vidal wrote yesterday (22nd May 2012) in his piece "The Chelsea flower show is nature for the 1%" that RHS Chelsea epitomises a surreal version of nature so cherished and exalted by London's wealthy "garden enthusiasts".

"But gawd bless the…

Landscape Contractor switches to Pellenc battery power in aid to combat White Finger

Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), also known as White Finger, is a condition affecting nerves and circulation caused by vibration. The effect is cumulative – each exposure can worsen the condition. Harm can be caused by as little as 15 minutes of exposure per day for some hand-held tools.

Scampston Spring Plant Fair, North Yorkshire - Sunday 10th June 2012

Hi Folks

I am well aware that I have never produced (or entered for) "An Award Winning Show Garden" or paid big bucks for a stand at a recognised "Flower Show" and as a result, I may be selling myself short and not getting the exposure/leads that I need/deserve!

So, as an experiment, this year I am going to "bite the bullet" and do something similar as a gentle introduction to the "cut throat" world of…

Our Garden maintenance Service in Surrey and Hampshire Picks up Some Pace.

Over the past few months I've had great difficulty in finding someone to join and eventually run our garden maintenance service in the Surrey and Hampshire areas. I've always heard that finding people was the most difficult part of running a business but just assumed that the companies weren't offering enough incentives or were just understandably over picky.

The fact is that there are people who want to work but there aren't many who want to work to a certain standard for any length…

Biochar is wrong for Europe and further highlights the absurdity of ‘offsetting’

The advocating of Biochar personifies a process that needs to be redressed in order to get back on track with land management that allows a future use for land sustainably. I could pick on many dubious products or techniques, but I choose Biochar here because a) it claims to be ‘green’ and b) I have seen the damage caused to soil organisms by Biochar for myself, which I can only describe as very scary.

Also it is important to note that I write this solely from personal experience of…

Bugs

Can anyone help.  These little critters are damaging a friends Clematis, and Roses in Italy.  They have sprayed with Roseclear but to no avail.  To me they look like a type of aphid but hard to tell from the photos, so the Roseclear should of worked, so perhaps it's not an aphid?  Any…
